Junior Guinea Pig
...... Litter tray trained piggies?
This was NOT something I set out to do, since I've heard it's rather tricky and I'd resigned myself to a role of Wet Patch Management!
Ok, bit of back story, our two girls live in a C&C cage with a hay loft, the hay loft basically contains a cat litter tray, with a sparse coating of wood pellet litter and a few inches of hay for hiding in etc. I was spot cleaning the other day and Buttercup was making a nuisance of herself trying to eat my brush/dustpan etc, she then went upstairs while I had removed the tray to refresh it, she looks a bit confused, potters about then pees in the corner where the tray would be.
When I went to clean them out a few days later I notice that the litter tray has a lot of pee spots, but the puppy pads downstairs only have one (under the ramp) and other than that are pristine and bone dry. I popped a flat plastic tray under the ramp (doubly useful as the hay rack is under there too and it stops hay getting all over the fleece) and put a homemade cushioned pad of towelling and fleece on top in the pee corner, which I changed daily (it would always be damp and covered with many many poops!)
Next time I cleaned them out - bone dry pristine puppy pads under the entire fleece, even under the vetbed in the bed area. Not even many poops outside of the corner under the ramp and the hay tray!
Have my girls tray trained themselves?!?! Whoa! Lol
Here is a pic of the cage with the ramp and hay tray removed (they both go in the run/hutch during run time) for reference
