Just noticed this on one of my pigs ear. Looks like dry skin.
20141109_204320.webp Could this be fungal or ringworm. I haven't seen ringworm, fungal before so I'm not sure. I'm guessing a vist to the vet is coming

Please see the vet for a proper diagnosis, as we can only guess.

Do you thing I should separate him from the other pigs

You can separate, but you have to be aware that you will still need to treat the others if it comes back as ringworm. Fingers crossed that it isn't!

Consult a vet ASAP, and it might be a good idea to separate your piggies. You will have to treat them if your piggy now has ringworm anyway, but we wouldn't want anyone getting irritated.

Advice needed please.
Took my pigs to vet about he's ear. Vet gave them a good look over and put sellotape on his ear and looked at it under aa microscope And couldn't see nothing on sellotape. So vet said to treat for mites. And tried to give me xeno 50. I told the vet this was wrong as all my pigs are over 800 in weight they need xeno 450. She went and checked and found I was right.
Now I don't think its mites. To me it looks fungal/ringworm. What you guys think.
Forgot to say I can't get to see my normal vet until next week now.

it looks like fungal to me. ches had this on his ear and the vet took a skin scraping from it to send to the lab for testing. it came back as ringworm. he was given medication (terbinafine i think) and also a cream to apply to the area. this was a four week treatment to clear it.

i wouldn't separate personally as they would have been exposed to it by now anyway. i never separated ches and maisie and maisie didn't catch it. i did though!

wash all bedding (if you use fleece) at 60 and throw away any wooden items (the fungal spores live longer on these) - then just make sure you thoroughly clean the cage each day for the full treatment time.

Thanks but the problem is the vet hasn't given me anything to treat fungal. I ask about sending off a sample but she said to wait 6wks to see if mite treatment works

If it is Ringworm then waiting 6 weeks is not a good idea as it will get out of control in that time. I personally would start treatment with Imaverol anyway, or see a different vet. Remember to patch test behind the ear for 48 hours first.

They can get both fungal and mites at the same time so treating for mites won't hurt but don't use the Imaverol within 48 hours of any mite treatment.

Imaverol is used as a dip and not rinsed off.

Thanks. I will give the xeno and take him to my usual vet on Monday.

Just a update. I took piggy's back to a different vets. Vet shone a blue light on he's ear and yes he has ringworm. This vet has told me to phone the first vet I went to and inform them that they had miss diagnosed. Grrrr

Did they say to use it in the meantime? If not, you could start on Imaverol if you have any?

I can use it tomorrow and I will get new 1 on Wednesday. No I don't have imaverrol.
That 1 vets gives my wrong dosage the other 1 gives me out of date medicine. A bit worrying

Does anyone know of the best fungicide spray to useto use for cleaning the cage

Oh noooo :( I had everything crossed that it wouldn't be :( At least you have had a second opinion and caught it early x

Hello
Hope you don't mind me jumping on your post here, but we appear to be going though the same thing! How long would you keep disinfecting with the F10 (it's quite pricey, so don't want to keep using it indefinitely)? I thought maybe a couple of weeks after the ringworm all clear? Also, how often? We've only had our 2 wee chaps just over a week and still getting to grips with normal cage cleaning!

Am I the only one who can't stop scratching every time they think of ringworm! Just keeping fingers crossed that no one else gets it :(
Thanks
Julia

You can get F10 online for £8-£10. I will be using it until the end of treatment, 8 weeks. Treatment for ringworm is 6 weeks then you have to wait 2 more weeks to see if ringworm returns. If it has gone then I can stop treatment.

Please keep using the F10 until after the end of the ringworm and disinfect everything thoroughly at again at the end of the treatment.
Here is our full advice: http://www.theguineapigforum.co.uk/threads/ringworm-hygiene-and-pictures.115402/

We all have the itches when treating ringworm, and a fair number of us have also ended up with the real thing, hence why we have written our advice thread to help others in the same situation with what we found is the best way of getting through it and preventing ringworm from spreading or returning. ;)

Sorry Julie forgot to say I hope your piggy's get well soon. Today has been along day at work.

Think I'll get the whole family out in the garden & hose them down with the stuff! Oh well, rubber gloves here we come. I also think our wee chaps can just stay in their bottom tier until it's all cleared up (they've got a 3 tier cage) to cut down on the amount of stuff to disinfect - think they're a bit scared to go up the ramp at the moment anyway.
Not sure what our vet has planned as we've only been given ointment, but we go back in 2 weeks. Anyway, one big positive is that Oscar's ear (I can't believe how quickly it went from being a little bit scabby on Saturday to a painful, bloody sore by Monday morning) has dried up & doesn't seem so painful, as he just sat & let me apply it this morning rather than struggling & squealing like last night - what a trauma for a baby :(
Well here's to healthy piggies all round & thanks for your help.
