Hi! One of my Guinea pigs smudge is now 3 years old! But lately I have discovered a crackling noise in his breathing! He seems fine in himself still running round squeeking with his usual appetite. I only noticed it a few weeks ago and thought nothing of it. Every time he breaths, especially when you pick him up, there is this cracklings popping sound from his nose! Have done a general health check on him and seems fine! Could it be a sign of something really bad? He has a adopted baby who is 19 weeks old and he seems fine. He also has white dots in his fur and I am not sure what they are , to me they just look like pieces of dry skin, not itching much either. When we went to the vet previously she said nothing about it, but I want to make sure he is ok! Any advice?

Hi and welcome to the forum. Vets vary massively in their knowledge on guinea pig health and care. I would suggest finding a knowledgeable vet to do a general health check and specifically look at these areas of concern to make sure there isn't an underlying problem. If you could let us know roughly where you are based (country and county/state) then hopefully we can point you in the right direction

Hi and welcome! Sounds like it could be URI (upper respiratory infection). Please go to a vet to get it diagnosed - Please try to find a vet that knows a lot about cavys. The white flakes could be dandruff which is linked to mites or lice so best to get the piggy treated at a knowledgeable vet.

This link might help - Recommended vets (UK only

Hello! Welcome to the forum. Please make an appointment with an experianced small animal or exotic vet. As most vets dont know much about piggies. Like stated above it sounds like an upper respiratory infection (URI). Keep us posted!

Have been to the vet she said to keep an eye on breathing and the white blobs are just dandruff! What would be the result of a URI?

Being completely honest and blunt, the result of a URI untreated would likely be death. The need to eat comes third for piggies after the need to breath and drink. Without food the internal organs start to shut down too. Did you vet do any tests for mites at all?
