I think today I officially became Red's slave, because I gave him something just now that turned on all of his switches. I have just come home after being gone all day since noon. I replenished his grass, gave him more porridge oats (he ate all of what I put in there before), gave him some fresh apple chunks, melon chunks, carrot rings, and corn, but this time I prepared the corn differently. It is still fresh corn on the cob, but this time instead of cutting a slice, I peeled back the husk and silks and cut the kernels off the cob and mixed a handful with the other fruits and vegetable.

That's when all of his guinea pig lights came on. He sat in his other bowl of pellets (it is a small two-bowl unit) the better to get at the corn more directly. He feverishly ate some corn, then went running around the cage like a mad pig again, decided to eat some more corn, popcorned so much he couldn't eat, bounced over to his grass pile but was bouncing all over that so couldn't get a bite, did little pig squeals, rooted through the corn again, bounced all over. I wish I had a video; I'd put it on YouTube for everyone to see. It is as though he ingested a guinea pig drug with that first bite of corn without the cob and went crazy.

When he calmed down a bit I put my finger in the cage. He trotted directly to it, and bit it. Not hard, but used those incisors to nip it. What I think happened in his little guinea pig mind is this: He was so happy with the food I put in, especially the corn, that he figured if I was putting something in the cage, whatever it was had to be food, also. I put my finger in again, and he bit it again.

If the popcorning is indeed a sign of happiness, then I have sent this little animal directly to nirvana this evening.

OMG thats Fantastic :))
I love hearing about Red's progress. He certainly has gone mad for the corn done just the way he likes it :))
Being a slave is not a bad job when you're rewarded with popcorns and happiness like that :)

My piggies absolutely love sweet corn too. They had it tonight, in fact. They go crazy over all part of corn - husks, silks, kernels and cobs. It is fantastic to witness and always makes me laugh!

I would love to have seen Red. Your description is the next best thing. So glad he is so happy and that he is continuing to thrive!

How do you prepare the cob and corn do you have to limit the amount in anyway like you do spinach. Really like to get my piggies some thank-you.

Sound's fun to watch and its nice to hear he is so happy. My piggies love corn, they can eat the silk's too.

So nice to hear 'Red' is such a happy piggie. I think we need more pigtures! :(|)

I do believe that Red has become a bit of a mascot for the forum xx

Looks as though little Red has become a real hit in your life as well as all the forum members. He seems like the most popular rescue story. I love follwing all your updates! Hopefully there will be new pictures up soon ohhhh and some popcorning videos drool Glad you have decided to keep him because the little piggies can be the light of your life and they love you even more then you'll ever know it's very rewarding to come home to a wheek!

How adorable!
My boys go mad for corn husks like its piggie crack. Its great that moment when you find something they will actually kill for!

No preparation necessary; I just peel everything back and slice the kernels off the cob and put them in his bowl. I don't know about limiting amounts of anything; I've had him 2.5 wheeks (<----see, I can make guinea pig jokes now) and I am pretty sure he is recovering from severe malnutrition because he has eaten nearly everything I've ever put in his cage. And if he doesn't eat it I throw it out as soon as I can see that it is not going to be eaten.

Well, now, that is encouraging! I will have to take extra special care of him, won't I? With the forum's help I can.

I was speaking to a Mexican friend today, and I told her about Red. She asked what his name is, and I said that I don't know if they have this word in Spanish, but it is "Redemption". She said oh yes, they have that name in Mexico, it is "Redención".
