I think today I officially became Red's slave, because I gave him something just now that turned on all of his switches. I have just come home after being gone all day since noon. I replenished his grass, gave him more porridge oats (he ate all of what I put in there before), gave him some fresh apple chunks, melon chunks, carrot rings, and corn, but this time I prepared the corn differently. It is still fresh corn on the cob, but this time instead of cutting a slice, I peeled back the husk and silks and cut the kernels off the cob and mixed a handful with the other fruits and vegetable.
That's when all of his guinea pig lights came on. He sat in his other bowl of pellets (it is a small two-bowl unit) the better to get at the corn more directly. He feverishly ate some corn, then went running around the cage like a mad pig again, decided to eat some more corn, popcorned so much he couldn't eat, bounced over to his grass pile but was bouncing all over that so couldn't get a bite, did little pig squeals, rooted through the corn again, bounced all over. I wish I had a video; I'd put it on YouTube for everyone to see. It is as though he ingested a guinea pig drug with that first bite of corn without the cob and went crazy.
When he calmed down a bit I put my finger in the cage. He trotted directly to it, and bit it. Not hard, but used those incisors to nip it. What I think happened in his little guinea pig mind is this: He was so happy with the food I put in, especially the corn, that he figured if I was putting something in the cage, whatever it was had to be food, also. I put my finger in again, and he bit it again.
If the popcorning is indeed a sign of happiness, then I have sent this little animal directly to nirvana this evening.
