Hi guys, just need some help,if possible as I am running out of ideas.

I noticed my boar had the odd crackle in his upper respiratory tract on Wednesday. Hoped it was just a one off and had to go to work. Got back mid afternoon and he was cracking very badly so took him to the vet. She agreed it was likely upper tract and he is on Sulfratrim twice daily. She listened to his heart and lungs and gave him a thorough check over. He is absolutely fine in himself, in fact if he was not crackling you would never know there was an issue. Still eating, drinking, pooping and full of energy, weight as normal. But he is still crackling very loudly.

Took him to the vet again today and she confirmed his lungs and heart are fine so I am steaming him with some olbas oil every few hours and put him on a homeopathic treatment called ‘nose relief’ which I have used before. He is also on 0.5ml metacam twice a day.i know I need to be patient and hopefully it will sort itself out but is there anything else I can do?

I am speaking to the vet again on Monday and if he is no better then we will X-ray. I am hoping it’s nothing else and I just need to be patient but if anyone else has other ideas or similar experiences I would be grateful! Thanks!

Hi!

Please take a deep breath! if lungs and upper respiratory tract are free and your piggy has still got his normal appetite then he is in no danger.
Please be aware that guinea pig airways are very small and narrow and that they can get even narrower as they age. Guinea pigs vcan also not breathe through their mouths, which makes every slittle obstruction in the airways very audible.

Have you recently opened a new bag of hay so hay dust could have cause the crackle?

Thanks Wiebke! I am a little neurotic when it comes to respiratory having nursed a few with bad infections over the years. Hay wise..no same hay and in fact they have dust free hay (as dust free as it can be), their shed is very clean and not dusty ( I have mild asthma so am very careful with bedding etc) They were being boarded whilst on holiday last week and I suspect he was a little stressed which has brought this on. It’s so frustrating.
