At the begininng of the week i noticed my girl Sprinkles had quite noisy crackly breathing, so went off to the vets who prescribed baytrill twice daily and loxycom once a day, that was on tuesday, she had'nt been any better really, and i was just having floor time with her and she coughed like she does sometimes when eating to fast, and the crackling stopped!

Is it as simple as that, she just needed to cough up mucus? i am still going to keep giving her the meds and keep an eye on her, if she wasnt any better by friday, the vet says take her back and they will prescribe another antibiotic with the baytrill, she said they work well together, i cant for the life in me remember the name of the second antibiotic, but does this sound ok treatment for a guinea pig if the crackling does come back?

any help is muchly appreciated :)

The second antibiotic is likely to be Septrin. It's usually the second go-to antibiotic.

I'd keep a close eye on her - if she's still quite bright and not better by friday, take her back. If she shows any sign of deterioration before then (not as enthusiastic about food etc.) then take her back sooner.

Currently keeping an eye on Jeffrey who is having similar problems, but sneezes!

Thank you for your reply Amanda, checked on her this morning and she does still have the slight crackle to her breathing, but think i will take her back friday just so they can check her breathing over again, then they can decide if she needs the second antibiotic.

Good thing is, all while shes had this, shes eating the same, pooping and peeing the same, and is the same in herself, if i noticed her eating wasnt as good i would be straight back to the vets, she loves her food :))

I have a "special Girl" she seems to get this every now and then, we just take her to the vets and she is prescibed baytril and it is usually completely cleared up within 48 hours, but she is always happy and seem healthy, she never go's off her food or anything. But it starts with crackly breathing then a cough and she is fine for a few mins then it may start again.

xx

Just got home from work and there's still no crackly breathing :) still giving her meds tho, such a relief :...

One of our girls was poorly not too long ago and after a course of Baytril, there was no improvement :( It sounded almost as if she had something stuck in her throat so we took her to an exotic vet who prescribed Marbocyl, Loxicom and Bisolvon. She continued to 'crackle' for a further two weeks but not as significant then miraculously, stopped. She has been perfect since thankfully :))
Good to hear your little one is reacting well to treatment and sending hugs :)p

well i have finally got to the bottom of sprinkles funny breathing, after lots of visits to the vets we finally worked out, as she is a big drinker, we changed her bottle a few months ago to a large one for rabbits, and shes been getting it in her nose while drinking, since changing back to the smaller bottles and using more of them shes been completely fine :)

This is interesting I have one piggy that had a few bouts of "Snuffles" & every vet visit showed no problem with heart, breathing, no URI etc. Eventually I realised that she would stick her nose deep into the veggie bowl at mealtimes & was obviously inhaling some water, so I now scatter the wet veg around the cage & we have not had any problem since :)
