I swore I read someone mention it on here - seriously?! ?/

I know its high on vit C but do they actually drink it/is it ok for them to have? I'd have thought it was waaay too 'sharp' tasting!

Though if they can it would be adorable as Daddy Pig has to drink it so all my ginger men could have some at the same time hehe x)

My Thelma loves it. I water it right down though so its not as sweet.

It could be I'm not sure lol. What I meant though was to water it down as there is a lot of sugar in there. So for 1ml of juice I add about 10ml of water.

My older boy often gets cranberry juice to help his waterworks and they love it!

He's most fond of the cranberry & raspberry tho which is a bit sweet for him. I do water it down lots and don't give it them too often

Unsweetened cranberry juice is recommended to give when dealing with urinary tract infections. It does not replace a vet visit and treatment with antibiotics, though!
Some guinea pigs like it (often mixed with water), but quite a few don't.

Thanks folks! (curiosity satisfied!)

My boar Harley had a bladder stone removed in July and has his daily Cranberry juice diluted - he loves it. It is good for UTI sufferers as Wiebke states and use it as a precaution along with his Cystease medication.
Funnily enough a couple of weeks ago, we could only get the Princes' brand rather than the usual Ocean Wave brand - he wouldn't touch it rolleyes

we give it to anypig with a URI to help ease the symptoms (we gave it to humphrey on the vets recommendation.)

I would have thought the only cranberry worth giving is the pure stuff from places like Holland and Barrett that you dilute with water. Ocean Spray etc is just a sugar filled drink surely.

Ocean Spray :(|) Where did I get Ocean Wave from (knew it had something to do with the sea mallethead) Doh, I'm working too much atm rolleyes
You can get the unsweetened one which is the only one I would buy but will pop into Holland & Barrett just out of curiosity.

Mine hate cranberry juice but I did make Yossi have it when he was suffering from urinary issues.

The Ocean Spray Light is the one people tend to use but, as it contains artificial sweeteners, I tried some from a health food shop instead. It was completely pure, natural and concentrated - to be heavily diluted with water on serving. It cost around £10 for a tiny bottle and, although it goes really far, I found that I had to chuck it away after only using a tiny bit because it needed to be used within days of opening the bottle.

If I needed to use cranberry again I think I'd probably just use the OS stuff because I'd still heavily dilute it so the amount of sugar or sweetener consumed by piggy would be pretty negligible and the benefit of the cranberry, in easing the painful symptoms, would hopefully outweigh any adverse effects of the sugar/sweetener.

Could you not pour the bottle out into an ice cube tray & freeze individual portions? Obviously you would have to fully defrost each cube before using as you wouldn't want any dodgy tummies but it would save wasting it?

Mine all like cranberry juice except for Bella, and she's the only one that actually needed it since she had a UTI. Syringing her the cranberry juice was a pain in the bum! :))

I used the Ocean Spray one as I needed it asap and it was late so Holland and Barrett wasn't open. I think for a short term thing its fine to use it if you can't get hold of the other stuff.

Now that sounds like a very good idea, thanks Poppy'sMum! I can't see why it wouldn't be ok (but if anyone can see a safety issue with doing that then please shout!). OK if there's a next time then I'll try freezing it to stop wastage but hopefully there won't be a next time! :)

Just wondering if anyone has ever used cranberry tablets/capsules from Holland & Barrett for piggies with UTIs etc instead of giving cranberry juice?

When I bought the juice in the health food shop I mentioned it was for a piggy and the lady serving told me that one of their customers quite regularly buys cranberry tablets/capsules for guinea pigs with Cystitis.

I buy the proper juice from Holland and Barrett - it keeps for ages in the fridge. I've just looked at my bottle that I have now and there's nothing I can see on it about it having to be used within days. It just says to refrigerate once opened.

You'd have to put them into water though wouldn't you? They couldn't eat the capsule/tablet as it is.
