Liquorice adores the warm saline solution (salt water) made up to bathe her eye.... she tries to nick the cotton wool off me - is this normal?

No - and it;s extremely harmful if too much is ingested. (Think shipwreck victims drinking seawater)
However clearly she wants ions/fluids so can I suggest you get some diarolyte (blackcurrent) and make it up and give her that. I have had a piggie recently who during his illness has been deseprate for his "diarolyte" fix. It provides the necessary sodium and potassium ions at physiological levels so can;t cause any harm to the kidneys etc (unlike saline solution)

Piggies are attracted to salt. That is why they often give 'piggy kisses' to us on our hands, particularly the palms. That's all I would think she is doing!
