Hi I have been syringe feeding my guinea pig since the end of June. He just won’t eat hay after a dental op. I have just noticed today that the vet has been giving me out of date Oxbow Critical Care Food. It’s onky out of date since June. Will this have hampered my pig getting better as the vet is now talking about it being kinder to put him to sleep as he’s still losing weight and has a fractured tooth

Hi!

I am very sorry about your issues.

No, the just out of date critical care won't be the cause of the problem. You can use it safely for another 6 months once it is out of date.
Your vet is more concerned about the fractured tooth and the ongoing weight loss/lack of feeding himself since his operation.
How big is the weight loss and which tooth is fractured? Is the fracture affecting the root as well?
Which country are you in?

PS: I have moved your thread to the health/illness section and also corrected a major autocorrect blooper - it had spelt syringe as strychnine! :yikes:

He has lost a third of his weight since end of June and it’s his left top front tooth. The vet didn’t mention anything about his root thanks

Has his top left incisor grown down to meet the opposing bottom left lower incisor. I would have thought this would have happened within a month. My Bill broke one of his incisors last year but it didn’t stop him eating at all. Perhaps he is in pain, can the vet prescribe Metacam for him? Bill goes for a conscious dental every 2 months to a very experienced dental piggie vet in Northampton because his damaged tooth has grown very fat and does not quite align against the other so tends to grow quite long.
I would start by hand feeding him fresh grass if he won’t eat hay. I have another dental piggie with a problem molar, he originally had his incisors cut very short for no good reason along with a molar trim. This incisors were cut so short that they didn’t meet at all. He could not eat well for around 6 weeks, he lost confidence in eating and would not eat hay and relied on Critical Care. We took Ted to the same vet (Simon Maddock) at the Cat & Rabbit Clinic in Northampton, as we were being advised to have him PTS by our local vet (who did the first dental with General Anaesthetic) we were at our whits end. Simon Maddock did a conscious dental on Ted, it took 10 minutes and he was back eating hay on the very long trip home back to Cornwall. They do lose their confidence and really need to be tempted back into eating, do keep up with the critical care or soak pellets in warm water. Oats are good for putting weight on too. Here is a link to Bill’s incisor problem, hope this helps
