Not in any dire situation, but just wondering. A pet shop employee told me CC isn't a good idea to give during a piggy (not used to cc) not eating due to the system being unused to some ingredient (egg? or probably something else) and would make it worse., Not the best source of info, I know, but I mainly ask as I gave a related thing, pro-c probiotic to Minja a day or two before she passed when it was getting much worse and she refused to eat anything for many many hours right after/the next time I tried giving her solid food.
 
What is CC?

If you're talking about vitamin c supplements, my vet actually recommended I give them to my late guinea pig when he was sick. He did ultimately pass away, but it didn't affect his appetite.

What DID affect his appetite was the antibiotics we had been given for his illness, and we had to take him back off as he stopped eating hay afterward.
 
Critical Care the emergency powder that you mix with water and syringe to them when they're sick? I've never heard that about it... I've given more than one of my pigs Critical Care while ill with no ill effects. I really don't think it would have contribute to the loss of your pig. Unfortunately sometimes they just don't pull through in spite of our best efforts. :(
 
Critical care does not contain egg. Its primary ingredient is Timothy grass meal. It is a variation of the ingredients in their dry pellet food but just ground into a fine powder so you can syringe feed it (when mixed with water).
One of mine has had a top up feed of critical care every day for nearly a year! And I have used it and Recovery plus for several pigs in illness, crisis as have loads of other forum people. It is good to research ingredients but please don't be too suspicious of it, it is very useful when battling illness.
As said above, I really don't think the pro C would have contributed to your piggies death, the lack of eating will be due to the underlying illness :(

My vet also agreed the pro C wouldn't have made any difference, wondering if it was just a coincidence. She passed from something within her stomach bursting despite many vet visits, but as symptoms come she did stop eating and lost weight :( rip
 
Thanks :) I'm popping out tomorrow to buy some things for two girls coming on Sunday, does p@h have it? I could ask my vet but I don't think they'll have it

Edit: forget p@h, I'm trying to get out of the habit of going there/pet stores to buy things I can get elsewhere
 
@CarnivalPiggy Good Ol' Amazon has it. And various online pet shops, I think i got my last packet from The Hay Experts.

Unsurprisingly Pets at Home doesn't sell it (probably because it's actually good for guinea pigs).

I know various rescues will use CC pretty much constantly and they have never mentioned issues with it.

And don't worry about the Pro-C. One of my boys has it quite regularly for his digestive issues and my vet is perfectly happy for him to have it daily of necessary.

I'll order some online soon. And thanks again, I wasn't sure the pro-c after Minja but thankfully I didn't throw it away
 
It was Vet UK I got mine from, it was even cheaper than Amazon, but check both :) Why don't you just use pellets if you need to? I used Burgess Blackcurrant & Oregano pellets, I whizz them in a coffee grinder (Only used for this purpose) then they syringe beautifully :)
 
I do (mint, though is the blackcurrant and oregano better in this case as I've heard it contain more sugar or calcium?), but figured having critical care might be handy anyway :)

Ohh thanks, I have a mini blender but it is getting on lol
 
Blackcurrant & Oregano is fine for syringe feeding, it really makes a smooth paste when it has been whizzed in the coffee grinder. There are some on Amazon for about £8 (Electriic) so for the cost of a grinder & the pellets you will have virtually an endless supply ;)
 
I think any pellets other than grainless ones tend to blend okay.

Critical Care is always good to have at hand. But they can get bored of it quickly so it's handy to have the options of feeding a few pellets and CC too
