My poor little Nibs is going in for an eye op soon.

Should I get some critical care in just in case? Which one do I get, the fine grind or herbivore one?

Thanks xx

You can get either; the rougher one is better if piggies have eating problems and need topping up for any length of time. If you order the rougher one, ask your vet whether they have a spare dog metacam syringe; it has a wider, shorter nozzle. Fine grind is easier to syringe with a standard syringe.

I would recommend to also always have some at home together with some probiotic (to counter any antibiotics; fibreplex, biolapsis or avipro plus are brand names). In my experience, emergencies tend to happen in the evenings or at weekends when getting hold of some is really difficult.

Here are tips for post op care: http://www.guinealynx.info/postop.html
Hand feeding: http://www.guinealynx.info/handfeeding.html

Best of luck! Hopefully, hand feeding won't be necessary, but it is better to be prepared!

I use the fine grind but that's cause one of my girls is diabetic so whee can't have the banana flavoured one.
Good luck XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Thanks everyone. Will get some in better to be safe than sorry xx

When syringe feeding, it is best to use a 1ml syringe as a piggy can take that amount in one go, making it easier to know how much they have had. Having any kind of narrowing at the tip of the syringe can cause a 'spirting' effect with the food so to remove the risk of a sudden or high pressure delivery of food into the pig's mouth, cut the 'nozzle' off the end so you leave yourself with an opening that is the same as the width of the syringe - hope that makes sense! :)

Will I need to keep Nibs seperate from flash for a day or so just to make sure she's ok? X

Its better to keep piggies together as this will aid there healing process. It will only cause more stress seperating. So if you can keep a close eye on her then i would keep them together.

As with the critical care, best to get the normal stuff, as weibke has said. Fine grind is ok, but has been made so it can fit down feeding tubes in the vets, ive used it a few times for this. Its the same stuff, just finer. Probiotic may help too, but critical care does have this in it too. But no harm in adding more in. Fibreplex can also be a great supplement to give.
