Hi
I have a female guinea pig who randomly has very croaking breathing (not all the time) she's been to the vet a few times but typically everytime I've been she's breathing fine and clear. When she's croaky she's acting completely normal it just doesn't sound good and gets me worried. Today she has been croaky all day I gave her metacam this morning which sometimes helps clear it up but hasn't done today. Has anyone else ever experienced this?
Thanks

Is she croaking or hooting? It can be a sign of respiratory or cardiac problems. I have a piggy who intermittently hoots (she sounds like a chimp going hoo hoo hoo!) But vet can't find anything wrong with her!

I've uploaded it to YouTube. Here's the link.

Please try and see whether a bowl of steaming water can bring relief. Dry radiator air can make respiratory issues worse.

It can be an exasperating process to diagnose intermittent rasping and crackling. It took me two years and a fair number of unsuccessful vet trips (during which she always held her breath) to have my older lady Ffraid diagnosed with upper and lower lung disease by a piggy savvy vet with an extremely fine stethoscope; it stemmed from a not completely healed out URI in her youth long before she came to me. It never got any worse and it didn't need treating as my vet recommended to not use long term antibiotic (risk of developing resistance). Ffraid died from old age and not from her respiratory issues.

They haven't got a radiator in the room they live in. How would I use a bowl of steaming water with her?
Thank you for the info. I hope my Rosie doesn't get any worse.

Sorry for delayed reply! Have been at Ellie's all morning with various pigs!
She sounds like my Eileen. Ellie found a mass at the back of her throat but as said above there are various causes of this noisy breathing.
I find metacam helpful if the noise is persistent but otherwise just leave alone as long as any serious causes have been ruled out.
Love the name by the way!

Awww hope everyone is OK! Thanks I call my 6 girls my Munch Bunch haha.. Ellie hasnt really heard it as she never makes the sound when I go she's just heard a video of it and was unsure.. It's hard to get her to Ellie when she's making it. It's like she knows and stops making the noise x

Just place a bowl close by the cage and see whether there is a change to the better or worse.

Yes everyone is doing fine thanks. Eileen slowly got more pronounced so Ellie could hear her noise. Hopefully if it's not a serious issue it will remain intermittent.
Ellie had a full surgery today. Her clinic seems to be doing really well!

Awww hope she's OK. O wow that's good (but not good as there's lots of poorly piggies) but glad Ellie is doing really well. I got home last night asmnd Rosie breathing was a lot less croaky so hopefully it's just a something that will keep coming and going and not serious?
