Hey all, after the nightmare with Cookie and his teeth, it’s been a long time of normal piggy behaviour but it was inevitable that something would happen at some point.

We had a baby 4 months ago and just moved house up north. We noticed at the weekend that Crumble didn’t look right. He had lost a lot of weight and I got him to the vets yesterday who is suspecting a kidney issue. He prescribed some antibiotics in case he has an infection but I don’t think it’s going to do much. He does a weird running thing with his legs and won’t swallow the Critical Care or his antibiotics. I popped him back in his cage so his mates know what’s going on and don’t wonder where he is... anything else I can do to make him comfortable? x

Hi! I am ever so sorry!

Just keep him warm, but not hot, and as comfy as you can.

Thanks Wiebke, the room is nice and warm and one of his friends is sitting right next to him, so I’m sure he’s warm.

The poor thing is sticking his nose into the wood shavings to get away...

Should I still continue to offer food during the day do you think? In case of a miracle?

If he wants to get away from his friends, please place him at a distance or take him out. His friends know. If he was able to, he would remove himself from his group.

You can offer, but he if refuses emphatically well in excess of his expected strength then it means that he is no longer able to process food. If he is at any stage in discomfort/pain, please take him to the vets for pts. There is usually a stage of discomfort shortly before death when the body is breaking down. Sometimes there is also fitting or leg scrabbling (we call it running to the Rainbow Bridge. If it lasts longer than 15-30 minutes, please speak to a vet.

There is sadly not a lot you can do at this stage apart from keeping his snugglesafe half-heated, so he is warm as the blood circulation is winding down and just being there and keeping an eye on him.

I am so sorry. You are doing a stirling job by him. This is a difficult period to go through and it may take a while. Keep him warm, quiet, talk to him gently to soothe him. If you've never witnessed it before a piggy going to the Bridge it can be quite distressing. There may be some gasping towards the end. Be prepared for that. Once that begins it will only be a minute or two. Hopefully it will not happen, or you will not see it. But be prepared.

Just do as your are doing and let him know he's loved.

Thanks guys he walked under his hutch, I’ve git his snuggle safe and his friend is still there I need to get the baby ready as he has a docs appointment at 11 -.- so I’ll try and keep an eye on him until I have to go. I agree that if he is refusing to swallow food it’s a sign..

I hope I will be here so I can stay with him if this is it.. or take him to the vets if he gets worse.

All you can do is play it by ear and do your best in a situation like that.

You are a caring owner, so don't feel like you are failing him in any way. You are doing the right If he wants to be alone, let him and just check on him from time to time, as you can.

Thanks ❤️ Yes I can only do so much he whimpers if you touch him so I’d rather leave him be and watch from a distance for now...

If you think it is down to pain, please consider pts. Otherwise, just leave him be and check from afar.

I am so sorry this is happening to your lovely boy piggie. Seeing them wander off to the Rainbow Bridge has got to be the hardest part of owning a pet.

Thanks Betsy.. it really is. I now wish I’d spent more time with him, but Velcro baby make it impossible..

I had 3 velcro babies! I know how hard it is juggling everything believe me!

Glad to know I’m not the only one we have reflux, dairy intolerance and no sleep! Yay! I was hoping the next one may be an easier one but I won’t get my hopes up then

Is that Kidney reflux or projectile vomiting reflux? My cousin's son had pyloric stenosis and he had to have a small operation to widen the entrance into the stomach and it fixed the problem. No sleep is very hard. I had an 8 year old a 6 year old, a newborn and 2 weeks later it was the summer holidays! That was great fun. It was never ending at the time. I don't know how I got through it but you do cos you have to. That was 15 years ago now. You will see the other side and baby will learn to sleep through the night. Everybody said to sleep when the baby sleeps Yeah right! like that's ever going to happen!

Silent reflux, so loads of acid.. not nice for him! The Neocate seems to sort it mostly, but they’re being funny about prescribing it.. weaning will be on the cards soon :D yeah I run my own business so sleep when baby sleeps cause it’s wor when baby sleeps -.-

Thanks everyone, he was mainly sitting with his friend all of yesterday, he started going downhill seriously in the evenings and went over the rainbow bridge at some point last night. I had decided if he was still with us this morning I’d take him to the vets for pts. But he must have gone at some point between midnight and 3am when I got up with baby. that went downhill so quickly and I just don’t think there was anything we could have done :(

So sorry to hear that your piggie has gone to the Rainbow Bridge. He will be out of pain and playing zoomies with his new friends now.
