Just had the girls out for a bit of lap time and noticed Crunchie has managed to chew her way through the ribbon on my dressing gown! I don't think she swallowed much of if but I'm now terrified! What do I need to look out for in the next few days to make sure she is OK?!

Guineas do seem to be little devils for eating what they shouldn't don't they? If she is eating, drinking and pooping normally then I wouldn't worry. Mine have eaten the plastic round a puppy pad and got away with it without causing a blockage, but if you are in the least bit worried do take her to your vet.

:agr: Just make sure she is eating, drinking, weeing and pooing okay and keep a close eye on her. I have to admit mine has done this before with the ribbon on my dressing gown and he was fine luckily

How muh ribbon did he eat? I've just tried to measure it out by laying the two together and unless I cut some off years ago it looks like she could have eaten up to two inches?! I feel like the worst mummy in the world! Do you know what the time frame is till she is out of the woods?!

She's trough in her hay at the moment. If it had caused a blockage how long would it take before she stopped eating?!

@XbeccaX I can't answer that last question but hopefully someone more knowledgeable will be along soon. Don't feel bad you are obviously a very caring mummy, these things happen. Keep an eye on her and as we've said if you are really worried take her to your vet.

@XbeccaX aw I'm sorry mine only ate about a cm. Don't be feeling like the worst mummy ever, it's so easily done, they can be so naughty at eating things and can happen as soon as you turn your head. I really have no idea how long it would be until you're out of the woods, but if I'm being honest, I think 2 inches is quite a lot of ribbon for her to eat. Could you not ring your vet for advice? Lets hope a guinea expert comes along and posts on the thread soon

Are you sure she ate it and not just shredded some up? Mine have managed to eat allsorts before including the plastic packaging from a new bag of hay (to get to the hay of course) and the rubber end from the dustpan (because it was there I assume) and have been fine so keep a close eye on her and any suspicions that something isn't right then get her to a vet asap. If she carries on eating, drinking, pooping fine and isn't puffing up then hopefully she will be fine

I'm not sure. She was hiding under my dressing gown on my lap and was literally only under there for a few seconds. The ribbon was completely ripped in two but very frayed and soggy and brown at both ends and there was none hanging out her mouth when I pulled her out!
I called the out of hours vet, he said pretty much the same things as you guys, also that if it has caused a problem I probably won't see any signs till tomorrow. He said to give her lots of fibrous foods to help push it through which shouldn't be a problem as she is scoffing her hay!
Should also mention that I wear some cotton friendship bracelets around my wrists and ever since I've had the piggies (since november) they've both had a little nibble at those every time they've been on my lap (and made them brown and soggy!) And they've both been fine from those!

She will hopefully be OK (it has happened with piggies of mine before), but please keep a close eye on her over the next day and have her seen promptly in case she suddenly starts looking "off", is off food and apathetic or in pain.

Update on Crunchie! She is her complete usual self this morning, eating and drinking fine, even a little popcorn, and I saw her go underneath herself to eat poop. Found myself waking up at 2am last night and checked her then - must have been my subconscious waking me up! I'm on volunteer placement this morning but my sister is home and will keep an eye on her and is under instructions to ring me if she starts looking off!

Glad she is doing well! My pigs have eaten things that they shouldn't on a few occasions... Linney once ate a large portion of a plastic bag when the kids left the hay too close to the bars! We watched her closely for 48 hours or so at the vet's suggestion, but she fortunately had no issues passing it on through. I seem to remember one of the others eating plastic too... again, no ill effects. I suspect fabric ribbon will be no problem to the guinea pig digestive system. It's still nerve-wracking, though!

Plastic bags?! Good grief that sounds like it could have been nasty! :S I do not understand why piggies eat awful stuff like that when they have tasty hay available?! Who knows...

Here's a picture of Crunchie munchkin scoffing her veggies tonight - she certainly doesn't look like a poorly piggy!
