Hey guys, My male piggy *about 1* called spice has had a slight sleepies in the corner of one of his eyes, i have been monitoring it over the last couple of days but today it has gotten worse, and he has these little tiny crusty bits all over his eyes. I am aware that sticky eyes can be a symptom of a URI hence why its been carefully monitored. he has NO other symptoms. No runny nose, Eating well, normal breathing, If this doesnt clear up i will take him to the vets on monday. (theyre just up the road and seem to be helpfull but i havnt had enough experience to know if they are piggy savvy)

Does anyone know what his crusty eye could be OTHER than a URI? and if so is there anything i can do?

Guinea pigs can get conjunctivitis, which Vets usually treat with fucithalmic eye drops. It could maybe be that? Apparently Conjunctivitis can indicate that a URI is brewing though, so even if Spice doesn't have any other URI symptoms I'd definitely keep a very close eye on him, as you are already.

Eye problems are something that you really should consult a Vet about but I know that some people use chloramphenicol based drops sold over the counter for humans, like Optrex Infected Eyes drops.

Hope it clears quickly.

:/

Thankyou, I will be taking him to the vets on monday, i have heard people use a saline solution to keep it clean? What ratio is this?

The only reason he hasnt been before is it was a relativly tiny sleepy. :( Suddenly it seems to have got much worse!

Truffles had conjunctivitis

My guinea had conjunctivitis - It didnt spread to the other piggy - just be extra careful and dont nuzzle piggy ,as if it is conjunctivitis you can catch it, and you can pass it backwards and forwards to each other - ( the same can happen with colds )x>>

Great Western vets in Swindon are piggie savvy...suggest you take him there.

Lots of things can cause crusty eyes including URI, entropion (inward growing eyelashes which is genetic), allergy to hy or fabric softener (or other), hay poke, low humidity etc etc.

Best to see a vet to find out the cause before treating as you need differering treatments for differing causes..all of which should give a healthy recovery.

:)

Thankyou, i would never treat without a vet, i simply wanted to use the saline solution to remove the crust as i didnt find it untill too late to see the vet today. Thankyou for that link i will be calling them tomorrow, I had no idea they were so close! :)

:)

Well last night I *very gently* removed the crust with cooled boiled water. This morning, there was no sign of crust at all! I am keeping an eye. I rang the vets anyway and they said if there are no symptoms its likely something just iritated him and me washing it has removed it. If the symptoms appear again take him in. :)
