The Cat and Rabbit Care Clinic, here in Northampton, have been offered the use of a CT scanner at another local vet practice. I've just been talking to Simon about it and we are both really excited about this opportunity and the knowledge that can be extended. The information gained from CT scanning will be invaluable when dealing with issues such as jaw and tooth root absesses, nasal problems, compromised breathing, lung issues etc and will give much more accurate diagnosis of what the problem is, and will give a far clearer view than xray. It could really advance the treatments that can be offered to guinea pigs, and could give a much better idea of long term prognosis for dental piggies. What is even more encouraging is that a CT scan can be offered for as little as £80.
We will definitely be using this facility if the need arises for guinea pigs at the Sanctuary, but I would also like to offer temporary sanctuary places to enable any piggies from other parts of the country to access this facility.
Obviously it's early days and until we start to do a few scans we won't know the full potential of this, but I think it is really exciting news!
