Not really Health and Illness - I just wonder how many people ask the cost of test's before going ahead with them?

I was really confused because I read "veg question"!

I don't, mainly because my pigs are treated where I work so I don't have to pay straight away. Either way, I'd find a way of paying whatever it cost.

I also don't ask at my dogs vets, because if he needs something doing, he needs it doing. Money doesn't come into it. He is insured though, so any huge bills would be covered by that.

I always do. Simply so i know if i need to borrow extra money from my parents short term. ( I havnt had to do so yet, and now have a job so hopefully never will!)

I think there are so many different tests / possibilities - so I insure all my piggies through exotic direct - its about £6.50 per pig per month - there is a £50 excess and a few exclusions,so you may wish not to use it if you only need some eye ointment say for conjunctivitis - I deal with a lady called Sam there who also keeps piggies and used to be a vet nurse.:o

I would like to point out, I would never not have a test done because it cost too much. I just need to be prepared so i can actually pay the vet (also I hate nasty shocks in the form of huge bills)

I agree.... thats why I think I should ask.... to avoid the nasty shocks....lol.... I just put it on the credit card and sort it out afterwards.... but the sensible people I know would ask first.... and I think it can only be a good thing to be prepared.

Unfortunaly, i have no overdraft, only a debit card, so i have to ask! hehe.

Our vet tells us first about anything. We'd do it anyway but she tries to make it as cheap as possible.

Not tests, but for example; Munchie needed her baytril at the vets but the vet told us that if she injected it it would actually cost us £4 extra whereas if she just did it into her mouth it would cost us the price of the medicine (25p).

But even if it's extortionate, if it's the best thing for my pigs; we'll deal with the cost! :)

I do, I don't give it a second thought.
Also, I put a little money aside each month each month incase something happens so I also have to transfer the money prior to the appointment to enable me to pay.

I ask now Hector's completely used up my vet fund! My vet has been brilliant and didn't charge me the consultation fee on my last two visits as she knew I'd spent so much there in such a short time and she likes seeing Hector! lol

I've got to be honest, I never ask first :red. I know that our vets offer flexible payments, so if ever we couldn't afford a bill straight away then we could spread the payments.

i too never ask as our vets have a flexible payment aslong as you pay some per month they dont mind as my family have used them for over 30 years and i trust if the vet suggests it then its the best thing to be done, however with my horse i always ask first as there first question is are you insured then they go test happy and if I'm insured or not i do not want every test under the sun lol

I don't tend to ask and like everyone else has said, cost doesn't influence my treatment decisions (but does hurt my bank account!).

I've never asked for a vet bill prior to going in or an emergency vet bill even for Thimble the hammys emergency vet trip. I did ask however prior to Percys neutering op, so i had the money ready to hand over and i knew if i needed to pay for pro/pre biotics etc.

But if my babies needed treatment asap money would be no object. The only time i would consider cost was if it was not going to benefit my little one's, or it was only going to prolong their pain.
