My new guine pig is testing(?) biting me. Not in an aggressive way. Like I’ll be feeding him treat he takes it and then bite me. Is it possible he thinks I’m a food because of the lingering smell from the treat/hay/foods? And ps how do I get him to stop/lessen it. It kind of hurts when he bites my extra skin. Thank you!

My piggies used to do that! Pet them while you give them treats and they will associate it with a good thing. They are just getting used to you. Oh and if I were you, if the bite breaks skin, I would clean it out to reduce the chance of infection. Goodluck!

One of my pigs habitually nibbles the humans. Sometimes she is trying to tell us something (usually "I'm done, put me down now!") and sometimes she is just curious and exploratory. We have used some of the piggie whispering tricks in the guide above with some success. We also just don't put her in a lot of situations where she would be tempted to nip (i.e. whereas we will offer our fingers to Leela, our other pig, because she likes to lick/kiss hands, we don't put our fingers deliberately up to Tomie's mouth, because even if she gives us a couple kisses you can bet that a nip is right afterwards.) She's otherwise friendly, not fearful, etc., but she is... overly assertive? She has improved since being a young pig but she's an adult now and I think this is just her baseline personality. She's a bold one.

Tomie sounds so much like my Cleo! Thankfully she’s mellowed with age too but quite a bossy little madam sometimes, especially with me! :))

Tomie is a complete little nutbar... I love that about her. She is always so alert, she smells everything, she pricks up her ears to listen to everything... it's hilarious!

Here is a picture of her when she could smell campfire smoke from outside... she almost fell off the couch trying to sniff!

She’s such a pretty little girl, how hilarious :)) :luv:
Totally the same with my nutbar :)) Far too intelligent, definitely the smartest pig in the house, so always into everything that’s going on around her! A bit of a sniffer pig too but not sure if that’s just because she’s a bottomless pit and will eat anything despite being 875g at 2! :))

She's adorable! :)

One of our previous pigs would bite literally anything put in front of his mouth. It wasn't aggressive, he just assumed everything was food until proven otherwise. It was pretty annoying but there wasn't much you could do about it (he wasn't a very smart pig!). We just avoided putting anything in front of his nose that wasn't food. Always held him with his head hanging over our arms as he wouldn't bite them.
