Hi, my guinea pigs winne and piglet have curled over thick nails and they are really hard to cut. I'm going to try and cut a little bit off of each piggy per week because piglet is having some discomfort w/ me clipping her nails. Any other tips or advice? I feel so bad for forgetting about their nails :(

I think it’s best you go to the vet for a nail trim if they’re that bad

Our Jezebel floof has thick curly nails and I got the vet to trim them, I bought piggy nail clippers but they just wouldnt do the job at all and we both got very upset and I just called the vet instead, they took care of it no problem.

I use human clippers. But for these curly nails get it done at a vets so they can start you back off with a clean canvess. Then you can learn how to maintain them from then on maybe? Careful not to cut the quick.

A vet trip sounds like it's needed. They are used to dealing with awkward piggies and/or awkward nails. Don't feel bad about not checking nails - it happens!

Thank you for all of the replies. We do not have any access to a vet that is less than an hour away in our neighborhood.

No. This week I will try to clip a little bit off of both piggies until I get it to a manageble level. I'll try to use food to keep them clam while I clip their nails. I'm just so nervous that I will cut the quick. One of my piggies has black nails and hers are the longest and most unmanagable. They are thick and curled, I noticed she's been having some discomfort with them.

Wrap piggy up tightly in a towel with the foot you wish to clip the nails of hanging out. If possible have someone else to hold sausage roll piggy and distract with fave food while you get clipping, unwrap piggy and repeat until all nails have been clipped. Good luck !

Also; how do I know if I'm to close to the quick with my black-nailed piggie? She already HATES getting her nails clipped because their quite overgrown and I don't want to make her trust me even less. I've been trying to build my trust with them by holding and petting them more.

Some say use a torch, but its never worked for me. I just hope for the best
