As some of you may remember we lost our beloved Tetley whilst we were on holiday in August. He shared his home with Curly, a huge hunk of a Rex who was just as daft as Tetley! We have been trying to decide what to do about getting Curly a new cagemate, do we get him neutered and get him a girlfriend (not keen on this option purely because of the surgery involved, call me a wimp!), get him a baby boar and hope the two get along as the little chap grows or try to bond him with my other pair of boars, one of whom is Curly's brother.
My boys have always shared a run divided in two so that the two pairs can "chat" and I continued to put Curly in his half so that he could see the other boys. We had tried introducing the three during lap time, but Snowy (almost 4) and Herbie (2) tried to run away! A couple of weeks ago I decided to try the three in the run together. I moved the run to a "neutral" area and put in a plate of fresh food grabbed the three boys and stuck them in. The girls and I took a side/end each and waited, towels in hand - nothing, they just ate the food, had a brief sniff of each other and then began munching on the grass! Here are a couple of photos showing their first introductions.
L to R Curly, Herbie & Snowy - wow this food tastes good, give me the plate!
Um what do you think of the carrot spaghetti Herb?
Can't get enough of the stuff myself!
And finally, Herbie just being very sweet!
We continued in this way for about a week, only putting the boys back into their separate hutches overnight. After much deliberating I finally took the plunge and put them all in a large hutch together, made sure there was plenty of food, hay and water bottles, shut the door and left them to it. In the morning, much to my relief, I was greeted by three wheeking boys all in one piece! Thankfully they seem to be getting on like a house on fire (touching wood frantically) - I think it has helped that not one of them is particularly keen on throwing his weight around, they are so gentlemanly!
Hope you enjoyed the photos, will keep you posted.
