Hi all, sorry I haven't posted for a while, but I have been inundated with work compounded by problems getting out and about due to the snow!

I am a little concerned about Curly, my 4 year old rex boar. Curly lost his brother over the summer but seems to be coping ok being a single boy. My gang are currently housed upstairs in the house, Jazz and his ladies in one large enclosure and Curly in a cage which is pushed right up next to the gangs so he can "talk" to them.

Curly is a chubster (around the 3lb mark), loves his food and is a real nosey so and so. I was therefore worried this morning to find he hadn't finished all his supper and he didn't rush over to greet me when I went into the playroom. On closer inspection he was sitting looking rather unhappy under his log tunnel.

Having checked him over I was concerned that he had the onset of bloat (which is what I lost his brother to in the summer) so booked an emergency vet appointment. In the meantime, I had him on a heat pad and gently massaged his tummy, which whilst it wasn't rock solid, it wasn't as soft as normal. The only thing I can think might have triggered an attic is some cabbage he had last night, most of which he left, it was only a small amount and he has had it before without any adverse reactions.

The vet checked him out thoroughly and basically couldn't find anything obviously wrong with him. By the time we got there his tummy was feeling nice and "squishy" and he had done some poos. She said he had good gut sounds, his abdomen was soft to the touch, no obvious bladder issues and his chest was clear and teeth seemed fine.

She has given me some Metoclopramide tablets (used to treat stasis) to bring away just in case and said she was happy for me to syringe some critical care into him as he is pooing. Since we have been home I've given him some CC and water, offered him a spring of parsley which is a favourite - but he turned his nose up at this. Whilst out I bought some Dentinox infant colic drops as mine were out of date and also some Buscopan.

I am at a loss as to what to do. I guess what I am asking is will it do him any harm, bearing in mind he hasn't actually had any meds, to give him a dose of Buscopan and some Dentinox? Bloat/trapped wind seems to be the most obvious diagnosis at the moment and if this doesn't work, I can then try the Metoclopramide - which I think the vet only gave me as cover in case we get snowed in again.

Can someone please remind me of the correct dosage for both the Busopan and Dentinox as I haven't had to use either for a very long time.

Sorry for the long post, but I am really worried about my gorgeous boy, and am at a loss to know what to do for the best.

Hi

Sorry to hear Curly is out of sorts. I can't really give any advice but just wanted to wish him well. I've never used either of the things you mention, I only use Gripe Water on mine if needed. However there is a Sticky that Laura CCC4 did about first aid kit - I'll try and find it, think it mentioned Buscopan

Thanks Sophie, I'm just going through some of the old posts now. Will keep you posted.

Dose is still the same!
At that age I tend to include heart problems on the list of possible problems. Is he moving around, are his ears cold, does he want to eat?

Sorry AP only just seen the second part of your post. Curly's ears aren't cold and he had a little wander around the floor when I popped him down. Up until late yesterday evening he appeared to be 100% fine, running around, chatting and eating. It was only this morning that he suddenly seemed under the weather and not interested in any food.

He has taken some CC and his Buscopan and Dentinox, but is still sitting quietly under the tunnel.

Will it be ok to try to tempt him with some corriander/parsley/celery leaves later or should I stick to hay and pellets tonight?

Thanks for your advice. Sandra

I'm sorry Curly is not his usual self, Sandra! I always have Buscopan to hand as I've got two pigs with chronic (mild but easily aggravated) bloat, one tablet usually sorts them out.

He is a senior guinea so a bit of slowing down may be expected, but a sudden change can be a cause for concern. I also wondered about heart trouble when I read your post. Has he had any previous illnesses, or has he been mostly healthy?

Good to hear he is eating. Some veggies should be fine, coriander is a nice light one if you'd prefer to just give one food for now. Fingers crossed he's ok. xx

Sorry to hear the wee chap is'nt well I hope he perks up soon for you hun.

Just a quick update.

I think i am about to lose Curly.8... Have spent all night giving him CC and mashed pellets as he wouldn't touch anything else. This morning I think his little body is shutting down. He is incredibly floppy, his breathing is coming in little short bursts and he twitches if I stroke him.:0 I have gently wrapped him in a towel on my lap and I have been telling him that it is OK to leave us and go and join Herbie, Snowy, Tetley and the rest of the gang at RB.8...8...

I don't think he will be with me much longer but I would rather he passed away here than at the vets so I am just going to sit and cuddle my gorgeous little man for a little longer to see if he will make that final journey here. Please send gentle vibes for my special boy.

Oh Sandra, I'm so sorry. I checked in hoping for good news...

I think you've made the right decision to cuddle him through it, I'm sure he's barely aware of anything by now. Been there enough time myself to know how heartbreaking it is to watch though. Sending you huge hugs

Thanks Laura and Sophie it helps kowing you understand and that you have been there.8... Curly is putting up a fight to the end, his breathing is very raspy now, I just wish he would let go - this never gets any easier does it?

Thanks for thinking of us.x

It doesn't ever get any easier, but I honestly don't think they're in any pain by that stage, which is some comfort. Bless Curly. It's just not fair.

Hope he gives in peacefully soon, poor boy

My biggest regret with Tuppy was not being with her at the end. It still hurts me now, a year later, to think I wasn't there - even though it would have been distressing at the time, there is some comfort to be gained in knowing you held them and loved them for those last few hours/minutes/seconds of their life. It's hard, but you're there for Curly and that's important for both you and him. xx

He's gone.8...8...8...

So glad we stayed at home, despite it being very painful to watch - thanks for being there guys, will post more later, can't see for tears now.8...8...

just checked in hoping for good news.....I'm so sorry to read he just passed away.
Run free little one......
xx

So sorry to hear about Curly but glad you were able to be with him in his final hours. I'm sure he knew that. I was able to be there with Kurt and with Gethin when they went to the bridge and it's an experience I'll never forget. Hugs.

Sad news, a good way to go, it does seem as though he had heart problems.

Out of interest and for future information, what are the signs of heart problems in pigs AP?

As I said yesterday, Curly wasn't showing any outward signs of illness no cold ears, noisy breathing, lethargy etc., I would be interested to read up a little more on heart issues in pigs just so that I know what to look for in future.

I'm so very sorry that Curly has passed. You did the best for him and were there to comfort him as he passed over the bridge.

RIP Curly.

Usually the signs of heart failure are the very signs that Curly did not have!
However, other indicators include; change in behaviour, ie not coming out to see what is going on, a sudden loss of appetite, age ie around 4 years old.
Another two factors are the balance of probability as to a given condition and previous experience of the condition.

Caviesgalore I am ever so sorry about Curly. I'm sat here in tears reading your posts. My Taylor went like that in the end, was very painful but I felt proud that I had been there when she passed.

If there's anything I can do, just PM me.

I'm really sorry.

Thank you all so much for your posts, kind words and pms - it really helps knowing you all appreciate how I feel. So many people say "oh it's only a guinea pig" - those folks don't know what they are missing.

I am dreading my 15 and 13 year old girls coming home from school shortly. My youngest lost her little hammy last week so I think we are going to have a very emotional evening. Curly is wrapped up in a towel so the girls can say their goodbyes and tomorrow I shall go and buy a special pot and plant for my little man.x)

Thanks again for your support, it is very much appreciated.

Oh my gosh....how beautiful. I'm in more tears now! I wish I'd have thought of that. Instead my lil girl is buried in my parents front garden.

We used to bury the pigs in the garden, but then my girls got into a panic when we were trying to decide whether to move when they were younger.

My "piggy pots" are on the patio at the top of the garden and overlook the area that all my visiting piggies/buns stay in (I run a pet hotel) I like to think they are watching over everyone.x) I always plant an evergreen shrub, something that I can just trim to keep tidy and not have to disturb once it is planted. My eldest daughter makes a little tag to put in the pot which has the piggies name, dates etc on it - thankfully we have a large garden for the pots to live in!
