Hi all, I just want advice but I will give you the background story first. CC ( the piggy in the picture) was acting subdued and we noticed she had lost quite a bit of weight over the past couple of weeks. When the vet felt her
bladder she squealed so he put her on antibiotics last thurs. She wasn't really showing signs of improvement so took her back to the vets this tues where he did xray. The xray didn't show up stones but he said he could feel stones and grit so he is doing surgery this morning to flush out her bladder and remove what is there.

He said the stones probably didn't show on xray because there was very little calcium in them. Which is where I want the advice. If calcium didn't cause the stones then I assume putting her on low calcium diet isn't going to prevent them again? Has anyone else had a pig with stones which didn't show on xray? Any advice appreciated!

Her weight has gone from 1.3kg to 999g

Wow, that's some weight loss!

I hope all goes well for your girl.....

I would think it's unusual for stones not to show on xray. The usual diagnostic test is to xray as if there is nothing shown then the likely outcome is bladder sludge or interstitial cystitis or a UTI or occasionally bladder tumours.

A low calcium diet won't do her any harm if she does have stones and will help prevent any recurrence. It might also be that they find something else during surgery.... although I hope not.

It is unusual for them not to show but am wondering if they would have shown on a scan instead. I agree that a lower calcium diet would be a good idea, I do this myself and follow a plan that is well balanced so they don't miss out on everything they need. If the vet discovers inflammation of the bladder then vegetarian glucosamine or Cystease would be a good idea too. Hope everything goes ok today.

Thanks for replies. I'm devastated to say that the sugery found cancer. Custard has been put to sleep. So so upset.

I'm so sorry to hear that. I had hoped that would not be the result.

It's little comfort but at least she is at peace and will not suffer. Huge hugs from me and the gang here. x

I am so sorry to read this. Huge hugs to you, you did the kindest thing for your lovely girl, what an awful shock. Please feel free to write a memorial to her in our rainbow bridge section. x

Sleep well little Custard
