Bought some cut grass from a pet shop which was advertised for guinea pigs and rabbits.

Just been reading somewhere and it said "Never feed grass cuttings, as they may ferment in the piggie's stomach and cause life threatening problems. Grass can be pulled by hand and placed in the hutch or cage.".

Is this cut grass from the pet shop not OK to give to my piggies? I thought it would be because I see people feeding grass they cut themselves with scissors from their garden etc. I don't have a garden and thought this grass would be OK as it won't have any pesticides sprayed on it because it was grown for animals?

Can I give this grass to my piggies?

It said it is sweet grass. It is unbranded and in clear packaging, the pet shop have 2 shops and one of them is on a farm so I think they might grow it themselves.

I think by cut grass they mean like the stuff that comes in piles from a lawnmower, i think they'd cut it differently if they were selling it, but I'm not sure (:

could you post a pic?
I;d be interested to see too as I have a garden but no lawn...
Maybe spread some out on the floor or in a bowl and post a pic?

Here are some pics of it. It only cost 50p so doesn't matter if the piggies shouldn't have it.

it looks just like grass from the lawn mower. Does it smell sweet, and is it dry? I was looking for something for Bertie today and hubby got fed up and came and found me as I had been looking at the stuff for ages, so never did get any!:red

It does smell sweet and it is dry. It is a bit hay like.

Have to say it does smell lovely, I was tempted to try it myself! :))

looks just like readigrass?justgrass/puregrass etc, lots of different names under different companies, basicly dried grass- its fine feed adlib

The rescue told us to only feed readigrass as a treat now and again but to feed as much fresh as we wanted. Anyone know why? We haven't got a lawn either and they love grass :{

I think I will just try to grow some grass in a pot. Hopefully I can keep the grass alive, unlike the parsley in a pot which is now dead!

My local pet shop buys the big bales of Readigrass/Graze-on etc and puts them in smaller bags for sale to people with few small animals.

The one you've shown looks just like one of the "proper" brands but for someone with one or two piggies they would never (or shouldn't!) use a big bale within the 12 months valid date so you end up throwing loads away.

Your pet shop is doing you a favour by selling it in smaller bags :) Buy it fresh and they will love it. I feed it in a small handful per cage twice per week - apart from summer when they are out on fresh stuff.

Yep ,looks like reddigrass, great stuff for piggies in moderation.

50p is an absolute bargain. The makers of readigrass make smaller bags, but they cost something like £3.50 so you're getting just as much (if not more!) of the 'proper' stuff for a great price!

My piggies get a handful of readigrass every other day (per pair) - they love the stuff! :)

I suspect, given you are in Horsham, that you buy from the same shop as me ;)

I buy it for two of my pigs that are on a veggie-free diet - they get this mixed with dried dandlion leaves and other herbage and it makes them feel special when the rest are chomping on their fresh veggies. (Oh..and poorly pigs also get it)

This is not fresh grass - so no problem about fermenting. It is well-dried lawn grass. Unlike hay (which is also dried grass) when
the grass is left to grow long before being cut, this product is clearly from frequent cuttings of a grass meadow to keep it short. Hence why it is still very green and looks almost like fresh grass. ...and yes, it is similar to readigrass but in my opinion it is of much better quality. It is completely safe to feed and my piggies love it.

(Makes mental note to send a bag to Flintstone's poorly Patrick)

I buy a big bag for a fiver from my petshop because my bunny wont eat hay but she will eat it , the guinea pigs go insane for it a well!

Thanks guys for your knowledge on grasses and hay! I've just given the piggies some and it was a big hit!

I put a bit in their food bowl and they immediately come out of their house to investigate :)

Then Jenson (the one with bits of white) decided that he likes it a lot and it is all his, so he starts a nose off with his brother who was quickly trying to eat it all.

I put another small pile in the cage and the arguing stopped. The dried grass didn't last long!

They're arguing about something else now. They've just been trying to get through the same tunnel at the same time from either ends and started to make noise about that lol. There are 3 tunnels in their cage, but they both want to get through one of them at the same time! Funny fellas :))

Probably! I like the place in Tilgate or their other branch on the way to Kingsfold. The hay isn't vacuum packed and seems to be nicer smelling and also good value for money!
