I'm a bad mummy and poor Patrick, Thankfully it did seem to bother him to much and didn't bleed much :).

Hes all better now!

Scary moment!
I'm pretty sure my Betty needs her claws clipping - I'm not entirely sure how long is too long, but they look much longer than Ruby's and seem to be starting to curl, so I'm sure they need to come off.

Not sure whether to go through the stress for her of booking her in at the vet's or just go for it myself with the little clippers.
I've done scary cat claws, and teeny tiny wriggly rat claws, so I'm hoping piggie feet will be a doddle :...

My advice don't cut the quick! :)).

It was ok I just felt sorry for little Patrick but he was fine within seconds. :)

Poor you... Thankfully, it wasn't bad!

Oh the guilt is awful :( When Pigsworth first came here his claws were so awfully long that i cut a little bit off the end and still managed to cut the quick :red

Awww, I'm sure if didn't hurt him that much, but still, poor guy. I've never cut my dog's quicks (or pigs!) yet but have while grooming other dogs, so I'm dreading the day I do with my youngest dog. She has black nails, and they overgrow a bit because her feet are so hairy so they're not all touching the ground! And she is such a baby she'll howl the house down :)

You could get styptic powder to stop the bleeding if you're scared of it happening again.

You're lucky enough to live close to the CCT. (Lucky you!) I believe that CCT members are entitled to free nail trims.

Oooo, what's the CCT? I feel I should know, but I don't, sorry :red

Oooo you should :)), Cambridge Cavy Trust... there is a huge chance I made that up. They are very highly recommended in the gp world. Vedra who runs is the person who trains rodentologists.

Please excuse spelling :red

Oh I see, it's like a rescue organisation then? I shall google them!
I would imagine they have conditions for free treatment though? Like the PDSA hospitals etc.
Worth a look into though in case I could pay them to show me as a one off or something - thanks!

Cornflour works a treat :x.

Does make you feel a dreadfully piggy mummy doesn't it! I haven't done it too often, but with so many piggies coming through our doors it does occasionally happen. I remember trimming one of our girls nails many years ago, Ruby had some white nails and some black. I always used to err on the side of caution with the black ones but one day she pulled her foot away just as I closed the clippers and I'm ashamed to say I snipped too much off - looked like a massacre! Thankfully Rubes seemed absolutely fine, but made me feel dreadful!

It's a charity dedicated to the welfare of guinea pigs, run by a hugely experienced and well respected guinea pig "expert", a lady called Vedra. It's not a rescue, but an invaluable source of advice and treatment for many owners and their pigs. It's run by a fixed charge annual membership, with consultations and some treatments being free (for all members). I'm not 100% sure what is and isn't included in the membership fee but I believe that you would have to pay for any medications required (except for routine worming, which is free).

As far as I know there's nowhere else like it in the UK, so guinea pig owners travel from far and wide to visit the CCT - that's why you're fortunate to live in the place where it's located! (I'm actually a little bit envious!) I haven't used their services myself but wouldn't hesitate to do so, should the need arise, based on the recommendations of many here. If I lived closer I'd probably be there all the time!
