Hi Everyone,

I haven't posted before but looking for a little advice for my new baby pig that was adopted last week.

We've come home this evening to find what we think is a cut on the top of his head with some smelly pus on top of it. He doesn't like us touching it but bar that he seems to be his usual self. Because he's new and smaller than our other 3, I suspect he's been trying to assert his authority whilst we've been out (he has a true case of small pig syndrome!).

He's still eating, still making happy noises, running around and popcorning. What do you think is the best course of action for us to take? He will go to the vets, of course, but could he wait until morning? If he visibly goes downhill we will take him to the emergency tonight but he doesn't seem 'ill' or to have noticed it so far?

Thankyou in advance :)

Please see your vet tomorrow morning if possible.

Gently wash the affected area with a mild disinfectant like saline solution, which you can get from a pharmacy or make at home by stirring in 1-2 teaspoons of salt into 1 pint of boiled cooled water.

He's booked in tomorrow morning for 9.15 but will definitely wash it out tonight. Is it worth doing now and before bed do you think?

Once should be enough unless there is more pus coming out.

Sending healing vibes, hope all goes well at the vet.

Thankyou! He seems fine so feeling positive. We lost one of our boys just before this one came along to a URI which was awful so quite paranoid as far as the others are concerned

Sorry for the delay in replying. The cut on the top of his head turned out to be an abscess - I feel silly not realising because the smell was so pungent! The vet gave him a fetching new haircut which has made him look slightly like Friar Tuck but other than that, he's on the mend. Thank you for all your advice :)
