Cut Pigs Nail Too Short 😔

Hello,

Does anyone feel ridiculously guilty when you’ve cut your pigs nail too low?

Today is nail trim day, my pig Pip. She *hates* nail trimming with a passion. The only thing that will calm her is food/treats. I was on the last nail, so obviously Pip decided to flail around mid cut which ended up with me cutting too low. Pip has dark nails so it’s tough anyway to see where the quick is, I’ve also never made her nails bleed before. Loads of blood for half an hour at least. Dabbing kitchen roll on the nail every second. I wouldn’t let her leave until I knew the bleeding had stopped.

Luckily, she is alright and the bleeding stopped. I’ve sprayed an animal safe antiseptic on it.I have a fresh clean cage as it’s my weekly thorough clean for the cage so her surroundings will be clean for at least 5 minutes.

I gave her a little banana for forgiveness with a side of baby Ginger

It might be worth getting some styptic power, it stops the bleeding almost immediately. With the black nails (Sir George has all black nails too) I put my thumbnail just below where it starts to curve and trim below it. I've never (yet) cut his quick.

Good idea! I will get some for future nails trims (just in case). Luckily it’s stopped and she seems well.

I have quite a few guineas with black nails
and go for the little and often approach always nervous though

I use cornflour when trimming piggy nails - it’s also good for stopping the bleeding.
Phoebe hated nail trims and was so wriggly that it was a regular occurrence for her to end up with a paw in the cornflour dish
