I was just going to bed and when I went to say goodnight to my piggies I noticed my boy Corduroy's nails had gotten a bit long and were starting to curl. I wouldn't be able to sleep thinking he might be uncomfortable so I decided to do a quick nail trimming and his foot moved and for the first time ever I cut the quick. It wasn't bleeding profusely but it was bleeding... I cried, I feel so terrible. To make matters worse, I realized I don't have any styptic powder here so after a Google search I dipped his poor little toe in some flour to help the blood clot and after a few minutes and a couple dips it stopped bleeding.

His nails are completely black, as are his little footbeds. Do any of you know what signs to look out for in case of infection? I'm going to keep a close eye on his toe but I want to make sure I know what to look for. Right now it's just got sort of a small, pinkish flour scab on the end of it. :( Pic is not from tonight, just adding so you can see his sweet little face!

You will be fine. As long as it stops bleeding within 15 mins ideally all will be well. We all do it, even the most experienced owners still occasionally catch the quick. Keep on top of health checks and you will soon pick up if there is a problem but I doubt there will be

I did it at the weekend. My black footed piggie. Horrible when it happens but it does occasionally. I had trimmed 5 other pigs before him & then just made a mistake..it happens. I have a little bottle of antiseptic powder handy just incase, I put a little pressure on the foot/dabbed with kitchen paper until the bleeding stopped (like you would if you'd cut yourself) & applied the powder. No probs from there & piggie was absolutely fine after a cuddle.

I'm sure all will be well but if you are worried about anything, just call your vet & please don't worry....we have all done it!

I have done this too.
It is mostly black nails here and sometimes it happens.
But you did everything right and I am sure your boy will be fine.

I find cornflour works better than normal flour (just a tip for next time because there will be a next time) I got so upset the first time I did it but don't worry it doesn't really bother the piggie except for the initial "ouch that hurt" squeak but quite often my boys squeak like I've chopped their foot off even when i haven't cut the quick.

Yep I’ve done it too. I stopped clipping claws for ages and went to the vets . Started again 3 months ago. It can knock your confidence but don’t give up. Three of my four boys have black claws so I just clip a tiny bit off at a time

He does have a totally sweet little face 😍

Please don’t beat yourself up about this. Black nails are notoriously difficult to cut and most of us (and I am certainly including myself in this) have done exactly the same.
