so a bit of back story first, I went to the pet shop to get my first 2 Guinea pigs, I live on a small island and the rescue only ever has cats and dogs so a pet shop is really the only option, as there isn't really any breeders here either.
Anyway they had two female Guinea pigs left and one of them had small cuts and no fur under its eye, I asked the lady who was selling them to us and she said that the Guinea pig had been scratching at it but they had been applying cream and it was getting better. Anyway I said I would take the cream and carry on applying it, it's wasn't till I got home that I noticed two things wrong with that one being it said "do not apply near eyes" and the other it being 6 years out of date. So threw it away. The fur under the eye seems to be growing back and the cuts aren't infected but I'm worried she will scratch at it more. So do I need to take her to the vet? Or is there something I can do at home? After buying the cage and everything I don't really have any money for the vet :/ (I'm 17 and had to save up for everything and I'm only starting a vet fund now as I didn't expect to have to take either of them to the very so soon)

I have attached a photo just so you can get a better idea (the green fur is from the cream the pet shop put on) I will probably take them both to the vet Saturday (I can't go before as there is no one to take me) but would like to know what to expect...

It is most likely that you are dealing with ringworm; it is not at all uncommon in shop or breeder piggies. Please carefully read this link, so you know what you are up against and what to do. Ideally you have her properly diagnosed by a vet and get some good quality treatment and disinfectant to get on top of it properly. Please be aware that you need to treat both piggies to prevent the infection being carried on, as both piggies will have some of the thousands of of ringworm spores: Ringworm: Hygiene And Pictures

I agree with Wiebke - best to be prepared for the worst.
But if you only just bought them home then the pet shop they came from should help with the bills.
If possible I would also try and retrieve the cream they were using so you can show the vet. This way they won't be able to say they had already treated the problem effectively.
Good luck with everything.

I think that @Wiebke and @sport_billy
Are definitely right, it definitely sounds like ring worm!
I can't believe the stuff about the cream, that's horrible poor little pig!
(Adorable though!:luv:)

Okay well I might see if my mum can take them to the vets tomorrow lunch time so it's sooner rather than later. Loosing the cream shouldn't be a problem as the people in the pet shop were very friendly even telling us to call back and let them know how they were getting on and whether the eye had got better.

If it ringworm, please be careful when handling your piggies and ask your mum to read our hygiene tips. Ringworm is the most transmittable problem between all mammalians - including other pets and humans. The itch is very painful and unpleasant.
