One of my guinea pigs, Pepsi, has a cut on his back about the size of a pill. I realized that he had this cut when I was petting him and he started clattering his teeth together and purring loudly (of course he does not like this). I'm wondering if two things may have happened:
1. He was scratching himself because of mites and created the cut.
2. Sprite attacked Pepsi to show him who is boss and created the cut.
I would also like to know if it is infected you guys can't help me that much.
Thanks for the help, Rob, Sprite, and Pepsi

Hi,

It could be either of those reasons. Is he currently getting treatment for mites, or do you suspect he might have them? He will be scratching a lot and there may be other bald patches around his fur if this is the case. Do Pepsi and Sprite argue much? It is common during dominance for boars to nip at each other, and this may have caused the cut.

If you can, I would try and get Pepsi to the vets. That way you can rule out mites, which needs a course of treatment (for both piggies).

Do you have a photo you could take of the cut and post it here? Generally speaking infected cuts will be red and inflammed, but the fact that he is chattering his teeth and purring suggests he is in pain.

Hopefully someone will be along to the thread soon who may be able to help further.

Thanks missy,
I would prefer not to go to the vet, as the nearest one charges $61 just to walk through their door. A checkup is then an additional $81. I have purchased a product from Amazon that is going to get rid of the mites (if there are any). The piggies are usually friendly, and they always get along nicely. I have pictures of the cut, however they are not so clear and I have no clue how to get them on this forum. The cut is red, however i dont know if it is inflammed because these are my first guinea pigs and I have no clue what a inflamed cut would look like. They do scratch a lot, especially Sprite, but he has no wounds. The only thing i'm wondering is if there are mites. I have noticed that the cut size has decreased a significant about since yesterday, which clearly means that it's healing.
