I noticed my guinea pigs' nails were getting quite long so I got their nail clippers. Some of her nails are black so obviously I couldn't really tell where the vessel was in her nail. Unfortunately I cut it too far back so it started to bleed. I'm worried I may have hurt her but is there anything I can do because it's been bleeding for several minutes now ?

umm this happened to me once and i just put lots of tissue there to try and help it clot up

Have you got one of those styptic pencils or powder (I think that's what they're called) otherwise I just press a little pressure on the affected area with a damp tissue.

Get lots of tissue, i have a guinea pig with black nail too the thing to do it shine a torch/light under their nail then you can see where it starts and ends! xx

cornflour works really well dip the toe in the corn flour then just give lots of hugs till the bleeding stops

I don't have one of those pencils so I held dry kitchen roll onto it for ages because it wouldn't stop, then she needed to wee so I put a newspaper under her and she went.. It seemed to have slowed down by then and she was getting really restless so I've put her back in the hutch - she should be okay though, rightttt? I'm going to check on her in a bit.. I'm so worried! :(

And the light idea and the cornflour idea - thank you sooo much, I'll try those when I next cut their nails/if it ever happens again :) x

I am a dog groomer. Many groomers use quick stop powder or styptic pencils. You can buy them from your vet, or order from a good pet groomer.

You can use corn flower/ bicarbonate soda or even a bar of soap. Don't know how it works but it does! :)

It should clot on its own, unless your piggy is very stress (high blood pressure), or is poorly. DON'T PANIC!

Never tried it but I read if you do cut into the quick one option is to hold the foot under cold water for a minute or so.... if you dont have any of the other stop bleed things to hand
x

Thank you everybody for your tips and help - you don't realise how much it all means to me :) xxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Did the bleeding stop?

These things can happen, it's not your fault, it's easily done. It's always seems scary with the blood but she will be fine :)

Hi,

I did the same the other day, and I only trimmed a little of his nail:(

I dipped his nail in plain flour and the bleeding stopped straight away. I didn't have any cornflour so thought it may do the same thing.
