iv just cut my pigs nails and one has gone a bit too far down to the quick and is bleeding slightly. will it get infected? what shall i do?

i have only done this once and i just got some salt water and wiped it down, it did stop, but then we just left it and it didn't get infected.

If it happens when I'm cutting nails I just clean the nail with water and just keep an eye on it. Never had an infected nail so far !

If there is not a lot of bleeding, you needn't worry. It should stop soon.

Saline solution should keep any infection out. You make it by boiling 1 pint of water, add 1 tsp of salt, stir and let cool.

Alternatively you can use styptic powder from the pharmacy or cornflour to stem any heavy bleeding. See a vet if heavy bleeding doesn't stop.

I have used the flour trick as well, it sort of plugs the hole. I've only ever made a nail blled once, but the flour did work.

it bled only a tiny tiny bit. he didnt squeek much so i must of just caught it. feel awful though! poor guinea

It happens to everybody, sooner or later! :{

I cut at least one quick every time I do their nails... It's why I hate doing it and try to get someone else to!

The rescue I got mine from says that it hurts them way less than having too long nails, so even though it's not optimal, it shouldn't discourage you from doing it...

I've got a piggie who has a couple of curling nails on her front feet, so they have to be cut really short, I hate getting to them, she get's tense, I get tense. 9 times out of 10 we're fine but when I do make her bleed, I cry. I bought some Johnson's wound powder from P@H and find it stops the bleeding.

i think its more difficult getting to their front claws because they wriggle away easily. my boys generally tend to be alright with nail clipping actually they just let me get on with it thankfully! I'm amazed how quickly they grow back aswell
