Hi,
I have fallen in love with 2 boy CUYS in a local pet shop, i'm in Cornwall (UK). From the info i've been given these poor babies are bred in other countries for food! and grow big because of this, i feel sorry for them because they can suffer heart and liver probs and wouldn't want then to get that big, but they are selling them for £45 each so i'm hoping that they won't get many because ppl won't wanna pay and they are not to be taken lightly. I want to give them a home and try my best to keep their weight down, so just wondered if any of you can give me any advice? I know that i might only have them for a couple of years but then again that can be the case with any furry. I want them to come to us so at least i can try give them the best possible care.
If anyone had by any chance got CUY(s) or know someone who has, any more info would be much appreciated.
I can keep them in a good sized home in the garage near to where my other piggy's are.

Many Thanks
Carrie

I thought and from a bit of Googling thay CUY is simply the Spanish / Andean word for a plain old guinea pig?

Sounds good and if you know quite a bit about guinea piggies, then I would go for it. You sound like you will be a great mumma for the guinea piggies. Goooo foooor iiiiiit! ;)

from what I know, arent Cuys the wild sort of guinea pigs? That get up to two or three kg of weight?

Just like we have the HUGE rabbits that are bred for meat, and the dwarfs as pets, our guinea pigs have been bred small to be a more suitable indoors pet.

The cuys are not only very large and need more space, they also dont get tame, not very well at least. They often get bred with Polydaktylie, so youd have to make sure they cant catch their toes on anything in the cage, so if you are thinking of using a CC cage make sure the coroplast is high enough on the sides. Also, they only live an average 2 - 3 years, so I couldnt keep them - id hate to think of having to part from them that soon :(

Whether you buy these two boys is your choice.

I'll just add what I always say about buying from pet shops...

You are encouraging the breeding of more animals to be sold there.
Think about these little ones parents, where are they and what kind of life might they be leading?
Buy these 2, go back in a day/week/month and there is very likely to be more in the cage...then what do you do :-\
If they find someone willing to pay ninety quid for the pair, they will thing "great, people are willing to pay that price for them." And order more in :(

Please don't take this personally, it's obvious that you care and believe me, I find that wonderful - as someone involved in rescue.

Just my thoughts, take care :)

Barbara
