Hello Everyone,

I am fairly new to the forum but do have a question for any forum members that have experienced a similar issue to that which is currently going on with Cyril.

Cyril is a male Peruvian. He is about 1.5 years old. He has blocked tear ducts which are of course, not a major concern, with proper maintenance care.

Recently however, he's had a new issue arise with his right eye. Initially, it seemed like an eye poke and appeared to be healing just fine with a little intervention on my part - terramycin and regular saline washes. The whitish film they get on their eyes when healing from such an injury has all but disappeared, bringing his eye back to almost normal appearance and I thought he was almost out of the woods, so to speak. Then, today, his eye appeared receded or sunken. Up to this point, the eye was normal aside from the aforementioned characteristics associated with the normal healing process.

He will be going to the vet to address the sunken eye concern, as I know it is a sign of potential infection, but I wanted to see if any of you who have had piggies with blocked tear ducts have experienced something similar, and if so, what did you learn from the experience or what was the outcome?

He does not appear to be in any pain and is acting quite normally in every way. I've had other pigs with congenital sunken eyes and one who had sunken eyes as a result of not receiving proper treatment when young for an eye infection which made it into his cranial nerve and caused a constant back and forth (active) head tilt and eye rolling "tick" which he lived with his entire life without major issues after the infection was beaten. However, I have never encountered this problem with one of my piggies developing a receded eye from an injury or illness while in my care, which is the reason I'm looking for any insight you may be able to provide.

Is the problem associated with the blocked tear duct? Is there any advice you may have which will help make the vet visit more productive? My vet is fantastic but not an exotics specialist. That's fine, as she is very willing to learn along the way and seeks consults as needed. She is also very open to information and knowledge that I bring to the table on the subject of piggies, so anything you might know will be helpful in the vet visit and very much appreciated by both me and Cyril!

Has the eye actually physically receded? Or is it just that the conjuctiva has become inflamed/swollen and therefore it just appears that the eye has become sunken?

Ginger has entropion (ingrowing eyelid/lashes) which although attended to surgically when he was younger still causes him problems from time to time. His eyes can get very dry and then very watery and sometimes the conjunctiva can get inflamed (though not necessarily infected) and the eye looks like it has receded . Fucithalmic ointment seems to help him best when he is having an episode (as tiacil and other eye drops we have tried seem to sting him far more)

Sorry can;t be of more help

It seems to me that the eye has physically receded and not that the conjunctiva is swollen.

I've taken some pictures to get the opinion of others and will post those shortly, once I figure out how.

Pictures of Cyril's Eyes

Here is the problem eye - his left.

And the good eye - his right.

And a front view for comparison purposes. None of the pictures are very good, but you can see on the front view if you look closely, where his left eye does not extend out in the same way the right eye does.

I just realized that in my initial post I indicated it was his right eye that was the problem. Ooops! That would be my right and his left. :)p It's his left eye that is the issue.

Yes it is still a little cloudy :(
I'm afraid most of the people will be asleep now......

Good luck at the vets love xx>>> keep us posted and i know you'll get some replies when everyone wakes up :)

I am sorry that you are having such problems and am sending Cyril my vibes!

My Hafina has blocked tear ducts, but has not had any problems at all with eye infections in the 11 months she's been with me, so I can't help you in that respect. Hafina is a mature sow of indeterminate age who was dumped with two other sisters in a bad state in a cardboard box on a private (and very shocked!) person's doorstep a year ago. She was found to have a bad eye infection then, which was duly treated at the rescue they ended up in. However, the tear ducts were found to permanently blocked.

Anyway, I would assume that there is a higher risk of infection in piggies like her and Cyril. I certainly keep a regular watch on her eyes (which in my case are actually mostly kept tidy by her mates, who are licking off any effluvia several times a day) and have been rather surprised that so far that there have been no problems at all in that respect!

The Vet Visit

Cyril's vet visit went well. We discovered that he may have a bit of an infection going on, but he also has some inflammation in the conjunctiva. The combination of the two things has made the eye recede some and the swelling of the conjunctiva only makes it appear that much more sunken in.

There are several things going on at once. He did have an eye poke. The eye stain by the vet showed that. It has healed nicely and is barely visible, but the healing film on his eye is quite thick, probably because of the other things going on. Thankfully he has no real ulceration on the eye, at least not the part that is visible. Some of the eye is still hidden by the inflamed conjunctive tissue, and we won't be able to tell if there is an ulceration problem until the swelling goes down.

The other issue that we discovered during the vet examination is that a piece of Cyril's long hair was trapped under the swollen conjunctiva. It's kind of a catch 22. The hair made the swelling worse and the swelling prevented the hair from even being visible without the assistance of the vet.

Anyway, he has quite the regimen of care for the next week or more - dependent upon how well he heals. Gentamicin eye drops every four hours, Terramycin twice daily, and Flubiprofen twice daily. He will also still need his saline washes and regular eye cleanings, of course, because of his blocked tear ducts. Keeping his eyes clean will be difficult with the schedule of medications, but I think I have worked out finally.

All in all, things could have been much worse. Hopefully he will be on the mend quickly. The eye already looks a little better even after not quite two days of meds.
