Archie had this huge lump that came up on his tummy (came up within 24 hours), i think under his nipple. The thing that I thought was his nipple had clear liquid coming out. We took him to to the vet the next day, the vet said it was most likely a mammary cyst. The vet lanced (?) it and said that a mix of blood and pus came out. He said to come back in a week to check how things were going.
The raised thing that looked like a nipple went down, and the lump went smaller, and what looks like pus has been on archies cuddle sack daily (washed each day).
We went back today, this time it was a different vet, he looked at the raised nipple thing, which had come up abit again and squeezed it gently, and some blood and clear stuff came out slightly.
He isnt really familiar with guinea pigs (the first vet had limited experience with them), so he gave us some anti inflammatory medication and said to try that for a week and then come back.
The medication is Metacam for dogs, it was the only thing they had that was suitable? and we are to give him a tiny amount each day.
We put some on a bit of broccoli and he HATES it, he tasted it and was like urgh no and turned around and looked angry.
I don't think this medication is suitable for guinea pigs but I dont know what we can give him.
The first vet said the cyst thing might empty itself, but if it doesnt then it may need to be cut out. The second vet said he might need to go on antibiotics. This is just our local vets4pets. There are no guinea pig specialists in the area, we called up all the vets in town and near by to ask, vets4pets was the only one who said they had any experience with guinea pigs at all. Using the pet locator thing on here, it seems the nearest one is nearly an hour away.
Archie is not in any pain, is eating and drinking normally and is cheerful and happy as he always is and the same weight as normal, we would rather not have a long drive unless its absolutely necessary.
What IS this thing that archie has? Will it sort itself out? It is reduced in size compared to how it was before. What medication, if any, would you recommend? And any tips on how to get him to take it.

It sounds like a blood filled mammary cyst or tumor and it may shrink futher with continued treatment, but we cannot replace a vet visit.

Can you travel an hour? it is usually no problem for the piggies. It takes me that time to get to my own specialist vet in another town by public transport; I have done the trip on the train plenty of times, even with freshly operated piggies.
Travelling with guinea pigs

Dog metacam is the most commonly used painkiller/anti-inflammatory for guinea pig. Most piggies thankfully love it. Please continue with the medication, but syringe it instead of giving it on veg so it can't be spit out.

Thank you so much. Archie does not travel particularly well, he gets very restless because he is used to being in the run grazing, with plenty of space and grass, but if things do not improve or the vet recommends surgery, then of course we shall take him to the specialist vet.
We shall continue with the metacam.
Have you had an experience with these cyst/tumours?

I have only had one experience with a very fast growing blood filled mammary tumor. Unfortunately, the piggy in question was found to have a very irregular heart-beat in the pre-op check and sadly didn't make it though the op even though the specialist vet did get it all out. It had tripled in size in the space of a day. Without the op, she would have died from sepsis in a matter of days, so there was not much choice but to give her a chance and hope for the best... :(
PS: I usually have a good portion of grass and some fresh hay in the carrier when we set out, so the piggy is distracted and then drowsy with a full belly. They get used to travelling. You could try to train Archie to have veg in the carrier, so he associates it with something nice

Oh gosh thats horrible, I'm so sorry :( I hope archies is not like that, it has shrunk since I found it and the vet did check archies heartbeat, which he said was normal, gosh thats terrible though.
Its more the confined space that annoys him, hes very energetic, but he can certainly manage an hour or two in the travel cage, dont worry. I think we spoil him too much.

I don't think that you are dealing with quite the same problem as my Rhosyn's.

Update: went back to the vet, as the lump hasnt really changed in size and is still oozing, the vet has put archie on Septrin antibiotics. My dad is worried that as the lump does not look infected outwardly, that the antibiotics might make him get worse, but my mother thinks that the lump may have infection within that we cant see.
The vet said he thinks the lump probably wont go. He isn't really sure as he has never seen a guinea pig with this problem before.

Is it worth trying the antibiotics or should this lump be cut out? It is still oozing lymph, blood and, pus occasionally, though that tends to be at night when we cant see it, but I find it on the pillow.

Has your vet done a needle biopsy? If you aren't confident in the vet's ability I would consider visiting one of the recommended vets in our list at the top of the page :)

No they haven't done that, that should be done before antibiotics?
