I have bought a box of Cystease capsules to try and help Quinn but I have no idea how to make it usable for a piggy...

I found a thread last week and forgot to bookmark it :(

Hi I've not used cystease before but I do use nutracys which I think is the same kind of product. To help with bladder problems?. With Rosie's I open the capsule and mix with fruit baby food then put the mixture into a syringe and give it to her that way. I find putting into a 2ml syringe then transferring to a 1ml is easier.

@helen105281 can also advise :)

I got cystophan for Jericho and was advised to use half a capsule which was mixed with water, I think about 1ml, can't remember now as he's not on it at the moment.

No baby food at the moment but thank you :)

Thanks Kerrie will see what other people say and then we'll know for sure :)

My Emma is on a full capsule of Cystease daily. I mix one capsule with 1ml of water using a 1ml syringe. Thankfully she likes the taste.

I sometimes make a batch of making up 2 days supply by mixing either 2 full capsules with 2 ml of water and leave in the fridge in a small brown medicine bottle so it's sealed and fresh. I then give Emma 1ml of the mixture daily. My vet told me this was ok to do.

When Emma was taking half a capsule, I still mixed with 1ml of water

I have this for Beans and she absolutely will not take it in a syringe mixed with water.. so I put it into a bit of cucumber and she takes it fine, doesn't even seem to notice the powder in the middle

Quinn hates the taste so it's either cucumber, baby food or Ribena. He better accept one of them!

Hi can u ask Where do you get this? And is it prescribed by a vet? As my vet never mentioned anything like this when Alby had cystitis. Alby was quite bad with blood in his urine, he got metacam daily and an antibiotic injection every 2 days. It cleared up but will this medicine prevent further episodes as he's had cystitis last year too. Thanks.

I got it from my vet.. Cystophan capsules, it was about £2ish for 20 capsules. Beans was prescribed them for suspected cystitis. It's not medication as such, more of a supliment to help ease the irritation of the bladder I believe

I got Cystease (30 capsules) from VetUK for £6.11

Feliway Cystease Urinary Tract Support for Cats - From £6.11

Ok thanks. I will have a think about this. I am not sure if I should start Alby on these or not. He's had 2 uri's one recently and 1 last year.

It is always worth a try IMO. I didn't want to start Quinn on it but if it has the possibility of making him happier it's worth a go x

I completely understand as I had my concerns over trying Emma on it but like my vet said, it will do no harm to try.

The problem I have now is I'm scared to take her off it or lower her dose incase it makes her worse.

Our vet brought cystease to our attention years ago. She prescribed 1 capsule daily for our bladder piggy and told us to get it from online.

Make sure you get the okay from your vet to add it to your piggies treatment plan

Quite right. Emma started taking cystease after I had the go ahead from my vet

My boy has glucosamine supplements too for this bladder sludge. Now that he has been diagnosed with arthritis I'm going to speak to my vet about increasing his dose.

I asked my vet about these as a cheaper alternative to Cystease:

She said that they were the same and I could use those instead.

They've got 125mg of Glucosamine in them. Originally he was on one capsule a day when he had bladder stones, then he was reduced down to 1/4 a day (the vet I used at the time said they were useless), so compared to most pigs he's on a really low dose.

My current vet is happy for him to have the Cystassist version instead of Cystease. It mixes quite well with water. He's not too keen on it, but it's only 1ml a day he has (I mix the capsule into 4 ml for 4 days) and he takes it fine as he knows his veg is coming up next.

I also mix up a few days supply in advance. Do you keep yours in the fridge once it's been premixed? I do and just use a small brown sealed medicine / tablet bottle

Thanks all. I will mention it to the vets the next time I am in or passing by.

@Claire W I do. I used to use the brown tablet bottles but I managed to melt them with hot water when I was washing them.

I found some small containers in Asda a while ago and I use those now. I think they're made for baby food.

Thank you for that. I may have to look out for them as the tablet bottles get grubby so fast and they're not easy to clean and I keep having to ask my vet for them
