So bean has suspected cystitis. He has been prescribed metacam and critical care. Does this sound right as other sources all have antibiotics listed at treatment?

Hi!

Has your vet assured whether your are dealing with bacterial cystitis (which requires an antibiotic) or recurring (i.e.interstitial) sterile cystitis (IC), which cannot be healed with an antibiotic but is best managed with a combination of metacam (which is an analgesic) and glucosamine to support the natural glucosamine coating of the bladder walls. Glucosamine is classed as a food supplement and not as a medication. We recommend cystease, a glucosamine based bladder supplement for cats; 1 capsule per day. Sterile interstitial cystitis has become increasingly common over the last decade and is generally what affects indoors guinea pigs.

Here are our diet recommendations for piggies with sterile IC: Long Term Balanced General And Special Needs Guinea Pig Diets

All the best!

The vet said if no improvement in 3-4 days to bring him back. I didn't realise there was a different type! So maybe that Is it as he is an indoor pig! Thank you!

Sterile cystitis is not so well known, especially not with general vets; normally you start the list with antibiotics for UTI or bacterial cystitis; a scan for bladder stones or sludge and only diagnose sterile IC by default once you have excluded all other issues. The last is not something you can heal; you can only manage the symptoms and hope that eventually is goes away on it its own. It tends to flare up every few weeks or months.

Ahh okay! I may take home back just for general check up to see if its cleared! Thank you!
