Cystophan, Cystease, Cystaid Plus, Vegan glucosamine ?

I have some Cystaid Plus that I would like to start giving to one of my piggies, who has UTI & bladder stone history.

I used to give this to a previous piggy but have since seen some concern expressed on other threads about some of the ingredients.

I have also seen mention of other glucosamine products which I’m wondering could be preferable so would love some advice.

Could I start with the Cystaid Plus I have as a temporary measure and then switch to one of the others when I can receive in a few days ?

If yes to the CPlus - how much should I administer daily? He’s 990g in weight.

Re. the vegan glucosamine is there a particular brand of this that would be recommended?

I don't know about any of the ones you mentioned but my vet prescribes catease for my bladder piggy.

Hi, I used to use vegan glusosamine but the brand I used added extra ingredients which apparently were not compatible for a pig with IC. My storm has recently been diagnosed with IC and is on Cystophan which really seems to be helping alongside daily Metacam. She has one tablet daily. I do have some old glucosamine on the back burner though in case. I would try the Cystaid Plus first and see how he responds and go from there.

I have not used Cystaid Plus though so am not sure on the dosage. It has Quercetin in addition to the glucosamine which is different to Cystophan.

I should be able to pick up some (Protexin Veterinary) Cystophan on the way home today so I'll start him on that this evening.

Thanks! I’ll do that as the place I was thinking does not have in stock.

I’ll start Quinn on the Cystaid Plus tonight then move onto Cystophan when received.

He’s actually 1000g in weight at the moment.

I’ll err on caution’s side and administer the smaller dose of a quarter of capsule mixed with 1ml of water.

My piggy has had 3 stones so far and I ordered the vegan glucosamine and cystease but I’m not sure if I got the right kind, I have never had to do this before so I was hoping someone with experience with a bladder stone piggy could tell me what I should be giving him?

When I’ve had piggies with IC, I have always given cystease which I purchased from vetUK. I gave one tablet a day mixed with a 1ml syringe of water (to give them extra water)

Thank you for the advice, He just had his third surgery and had a hard time recovering after the third, it’s only been 6 days and I’m afraid he might have another one already, he seemed fine yesterday but now he’s squealing while peeing again and there is some calcium deposits in his urine. I ordered cystease but it hasn’t arrived yet. I’m trying to hold on to hope but I’m really worried that it’s not going to help. I just started syringe feeding him 15 ml of water twice a day and I changed his diet so there’s not hardly any calcium but I’m afraid I’m not doing enough. Do you know of anyone who has had a pig with a stone that had successful treatment with cystease or is it too late one they get the stone?

I really hope that the cystease works. Has your vet looked at interstitial cystitis (IC) at all?

Sadly once a stone has formed, the only way to get rid of it is through surgery

I have had piggies with bladder stones. I give them long term cystophan, extra fluids, reduce their pellets, and if the vet agrees long term metacam. In three instances no stone has recurred after over a years treatment.

Thank you this gives me hope, I am taking him tomorrow for a follow up X-ray and hopefully the stone hasn’t formed yet, I can feel some gritty bits in his urine which I don’t know is a good sign that the sludge is getting flushed out or is it a bad sign. I just hope I can keep his bladder flushed so that they don’t reoccur. I appreciate everyone’s replies though, thank you.

I got a follow up X-ray, no stone! The fluids have been working! I’m soo happy, I did find out though that the last vet had fractured his hip during surgery so now I have to figure out how I will get that to heal. I’m just so glad there’s no stone
