Daily Veg - Any Suggestions?

Mine have a mixture of two or three of the following... tomatoes, spring greens, runner beans, savoy cabbage, grapes, plums, carrots, sweetcorn, melon shell (the skin not the flesh), green cabbage, sweetheart cabbage, (they also get cucumber VERY occasionally because my vet says its bad for both guinea pigs and rabbits) and probs some others but I can't remember at the moment.

As for this whole 3 bowls a day thing... my piggies seem fat with veg twice a day (I think they just puff themselves out to fool me though), I'd hate to see what they'd be like if I gave them any more.... :-\

I think this site is amazing. There is some (well a lot) of great advice and everyone is very helpful with criticism where it's needed.

No offence guineapigvet, but the name is a little bit misleading. No one is getting on to you but if my nick was Blonde_18 i'm sure that's what people would think i was. You're very helpful on this site and i think your opinions matter. You shouldn't leave :)

PS.. What is wrong with savoy cabbage? o_O luckily clover has gone off this... I didn't know it could be dangerous.

Neither did I.  I've fed this to my piggies in the past.

Mary,
You have made some valuable contributions to the forum, but it is of course your decision to leave or stay.
Everyone has their own routines with their piggies, what is right for one is not for another, yet who is to say any are wrong.

I only feed mine once a day because they get a large bowlful of veggies containing 7-9 different ones. This may be considered wrong by some but my piggies are happy.

If i feed spring greens, kale or romaine on 2 consecutive days Albie becomes "soft" but he's the only one.

I would just like to say that my pigs do not get soft pellets and they are not overweight.Piggies are not greedy animals and will not overeat. I have already explained in a previous post that I am not pretending to be a vet,the board name I chose was a silly mistake and I am going to re register under the name I use on Peters board. It is sad that some of you are choosing to ignore all I say.because I never suggest any thing that I have not used on my own pigs,or know has been used by other owners.I will not be messaging again under this name and may decide not to re register because frankly I do not like this board very much,I find it rather childish and silly. Mary

Childish and silly?

I'm sorry you feel this way. The idea of a forum is to express and share opinions, ideas, interests and advice. Many people might agree or disagree but this is their own choice.
Everyone is entitled to that and it may be that someone just has different experience to you, who is best to know what their piggies are like or even what food they are into? Only the individual can answer.

This all being down to choice.

If someone chooses to believe/go along with others and not yourself, or indeed yourself and not others, then surely they should be able to?

It is not really up to anyone to say what is right for definite when it is wrong in someone elses eyes and vice versa.

I agree with others that your name is misleading and you have said it was a wrong choice. But for others coming onto the forum they do not know that you're not a vet - having not read a previous post fom you.

Also not everyone follows advice anyway given by their vet who is meant to know best. Again this is choice.
You, yourself mentioned that you ignore them so why is it different that you are 'ignored' on this occasion?

I have had arguments with Andy over this vexed question. He has a bee in his bonnet about not giving veggies, only herbs and grass. In an ideal world yes this would be great.,but in reality herbs are expensive and not all that easy to get.,also parsley is high in calcium and I do not think it should be given everday. Some of my pigs will not eat coriander and some will not touch dill,.I do not agree with Andy that they should be given dandelion every day because it contains laxative and diuretic properties. It is great to have a vet so interested and caring about pigs but I do disagree on his diet views. Anne thinks more like I do that we have to use the veggies available.. Mary

You are yourself ignoring and disagreeing with a vet 'in the know'?

Please don't assume that people are ignoring you because they don't take your advice. People don't always take mine, but it's the way it goes :)

Your posts like all, have been invaluable, but it is a choice that you make to leave.

I agree with you Kelly, the idea of visiting this forum is to see if anyone has any ideas or opinions on our certain problems or to simply share a happy / sad situation. Its nice to see that we all have healthy variety of opinions but just because someone tells us something doesn't mean we HAVE to do it or follow that advice to the letter, It also doesn't mean we are childish or stupid if we don't take that advice.
At the end of the day as I am sure alot of others will agree what happens to my pigs and what I do to them / feed them is MY choice and Yes the only time I'm stupid and childish is when I walk in the door at night and four piggy 'chops' are all facing me at the door as if to say"Where the hell have you been?" then you can call me childish and perhaps a bit daft too!

We are all human beings and entitled to our own choices, always open to others opinions but entitled to choose. Thank you (sorry if I've waffled!)

Hi Nicky,I wish I had not used that silly board name,I agree that it is very misleading.I have tried to reregister with another name, but it did not work, can you help?.
I apologise for MY childish message yesterday, the only excuse I have is that I had news of the sudden death of a close family member and I only came on the board to take my mind.I had no right to say that because as you pointed out I myseld disagree with people which of course everyone has a right to do.It would not be possible to agree with everyone anyway.I think with knowledge obtained from the internet one has to use common sense anyway, bere is a lot of rubbish out there, but there is also valuable genuine information.I can assure you that any products I mention have been used on my piggies or piggies known to me,I would not recommend anything that I had only heard about.Having kept piggies for over 20 years I feel I do have some experience to share, but no one can know all there is to know about one animal, especially animals as complex as cavies.Even my vets admit they are still on a streep learning curve with them.
The bottom line of course is that every owner must do what they think best for their pigs.Pigs do have strong characters characters so what would suit one may not work with another. Also it is extremely difficult to diagnose without seeing the animal.because one persons description of something can be very different to someone elses description.I recently had someone phone me because she thought her pig had an abcess in the throat,it turned out to be a harmless fatty lump on the shoulder!

I would like to stay on the board but only if I can reregister, otherwise I will just be causing confusion. Mary

Ahh! Sorry to hear about your loss. Thats exactly what this forum is for sharing!

Sue

Hi Mary
Sorry to hear about your family member

I had a thought last night, i do have them occassionally :D

Guineapigvet could be interpreted as veterinarian or veteran, given that you have had piggies so many years ;)

Tho' i do know the natual assumption would be veterinarian

As for how you change your name - i have no idea :-\

Am so sorry Mary.

I'm glad that you appreciate the comments left and took on board what we were all trying to say :)

I'm not entirely sure on how to change your name, although I know it can be done :( I 'think' that if you look under your profile page then you can :)

P-S post in the chitchat, we're all here to listen :)

what i do is all my 8

like cabbage
spianhed
rocket
watercress
cucmber
carrots
apple
pear
bracclia
and lettuce (not iceburg)

my older 2 also like tomtoes and cerly

so what i do i fed thme each moring and each night

i have a menu which i put down who is having what in the moring and night

so last night my oldest too had apple and rocket and this moring there had bracclia and watercress etc

If I am feeding mixed lettuce (not iceburg) every day (along with lots of other stuff ) is this OK. Also why are green beans (mine looooove them) and savoy cabbage bad?

Sample menu for my two

am. Mixed lettuce, coriander, chunk of carrot, torn up spring greens, red pepper

pm. Large handful of grass, In rotation - small chunks of celery and leaves, broccoli, parsley, dandelions, cabbage, beetroot, cucumber, kale, green beans, peas in pod

They hate fruit, tomatoes and corgette.

Sorry about all the questions - new fosterer and a bit nervous still!

BTW They have discovered their hayrack with posh Oxbow Timothy hay in today - looks like the nerves might be conquered by food afer all!

i think that looks ok as there are geting lots of diffrent veggies

but i give my oldest 2 2 diffrent veggies in the moring and another 2 diffrent veggies at night etc so there allways get somthing diffrent and its not the same stuff every day

and my other 6 i do the same but there get 3 veggies not 2

Profile..... account related settings.... 1st option is user name... ie: the name others will see you as :)

Thankyou, have read that parsley is high in calcium too. The boys do so love spinach! A friend and I are buying and sharing veggies/fruit for our four piggies (we have two each). It means that they get it fresher and we waste and spend less!

Oh dear, I think I am over-feeding my piggies. Everytime Tiger "shouts" for food I give him some - they both have their dried food each day, plus Timothy hay, during the week they get some fruit or veg in the morning, then again when I get home from work, maybe a bit later when I do the dinner or they are playing out, and sometimes more at bedtime - I don't give them full bowls, and Jeremy leaves some of his veg, but Tiger just eats and eats (but is less interested in his dried food) - neither of them have squishy poops, but they are both big boys. On weekends they get veggies maybe 3 times a day - sometimes its just some chopped cucumber or a bit of carrot.

Is wheeking a sign that they are hungry? Should I feed them bits each time they wheek?

I think they do this when they think they are getting something & excited. One summer we went away and left the piggies with a nice pet sitter. On our return though, she said they are spoiled rotten, everytime she went out to check on them, they were wheaking for more food >.< oops lol.

Ah.. that could be it. I'm sure though if I emptied the contents of the firdge in front of Tiger he would just eat and eat!

So rather then give them a bowlful I give them some bits several times a day - I think this is OK..
