Daisy died today, I would appreciate your help to work out what happened.

She was fine last night. This morning her hair was puffed up, she was quieter then usual - let me pick her up , she is usually skittish. Her stomach was softer then usual. She ate and pooped normally while I was with her this morning. I put her in the top level of the hutch, closed of from most of the group, to keep things quiet for her. She was in with one other piggie, who has a sore knee, and had been segrated because other piggies have been picking at the scab. I felt familiar company would reduce any stress caused by not being with the group.

When I went in this evening, she was very quiet. She wasn't eating, when I picked her up to check her over, she told me very clearly her stomach was sore. There was a firm mass on one side of her stomach, the other side was very soft - appeared empty. She had some hay in the back of her mouth, it was well chewed, but not swallowed. 10 minutes after I checked her, she was lying flat on her side, taking her last breaths.

I was planning to contact the vets when I checked her this evening, but she deteriorated so fast!

It looks like a digestive problem that has caused this. Has this happened to anyone else? How could she have been treated based on this mornings symptoms?

I couldn't bear to see this happen again.

This is awful and so very sad. I have heard of guinea pigs having a problem were they are eating food and it just gets stored up inside them but does not pass through their body. It does sound like this may have happened to your poor Daisy. I am so very sorry to hear she has passed away. :0

oh no....
I'm so sorry for your loss...
pop corn free daisy...x
it sounds like it could be a blockage...?
could she have eaten anyhting she shouldnt have...?
unfortunatly guineas are brill at hiding symptoms... so if there ill... you only know when they are really ill...

i remember years ago... my friend had 2 guinea pigs and one of them ate his way through a black bin bag... and he died of an obstruction of his gut...

just a thought... but i have never experienced anyhting like that myself so i wouldnt know...
big hugs bab...

Take her to the vet anyway for a post mortem examination; it will be soothing to know why she died, and there might be something that could be done to prevent anything from happening to the rest of the piggie family. Rest in peace, Miss Daisy.

First off, I am terribly sorry for your loss! Loss is hard regardless and I know it's always hard when you don't really know what happened. Unfortunately, there is no way to know for certain other than a necropsy, and even then, it may not always be possible for them to tell.

I don't want to sound callus, and believe me when I say I'm not at all. But, since you're asking for feedback on this, I figure you deserve responses. I do the same with the vet when I lose a pig unexpectedly. I always want to know so that I can be better prepared with future pigs and hopefully never have the same thing happen again.

Without having seen her, felt her, etc. it will be difficult for any of us to really give you answers. It sounds like it could have been a blockage or could have been bloat that actually took her. The puffed up stance was a pain response. She may have still been taking in food but may not have been enough and there could have been some underlying issue that contributed to it. Unfortunately, you won't know for sure. The squishy belly may have been too little food in her system and the empty belly on one side and hard on the other was likely caused by gas built up in the cecum (boat) due to not enough food moving through her system and her system shutting down.

Keep in mind that pigs hide illness well. Don't beat yourself up or feel guilty for not catching something. Unfortunately, one of the ways we learn is through loss. I know that has been the case with me and with others. That's why I always seek out answers after an unexpected loss and why I'm giving you feedback now on possible scenarios. Possible! Keep that in mind too. It doesn't mean there wasn't something else that went on with her and even if it was bloat, there may have been an underlying reason that she had it happen.

Again, I am so very sorry for your loss! Snuggle your other piggies and let them warm your heart!

So sorry :( Sometimes they go downhill so quickly and there's nothing you can do.

I am so sorry - it sounds like a blockage, and there isn't anything you could have done. As a vet described it to me, operating on guinea pig guts is like stitching paper to butter, and the chances for success are NOT good - even if she could have got as far as that in time, she would have most likely not woken up. :(

RIP Daisy

I am so sorry that you have been through this with your poor little Daisy. You could not have known she would go downhill so fast and as has already been said even if you had got her to the vets there probably would not have been anything that could have been done.

Please don't blame yourself. RIP Daisy

Just wanted to say I'm very sorry for your loss.

RIP Daisy

Thank you so much for all the replies.

It was such a shock, Daisy was one of my younger piggies, and very healthy. It just shows you can't become too complacent.

Don't I know it myself? I lost my Telyn last Thursday to sudden heart failure - she had just turned two and seemd perfectly healthy; it was the second time the same thing has happened to me within a year.

It was a big shock, and it can really whack you. You feel the need to make sense as to what has happened and to know whether there was anything that you could have done to save your piggy. Sadly, in those cases, most often there isn't. :(

Oh my i'm so sorry to hear about little Daisy 8...8...8...
