So I noticed that Daisy was crackling when breathing last night so rushed to the vets first thing this morning. She has been given a weeks course of baytril twice a day. I am giving pro-biotics as well.

My question is:
Do I need to separate my girls when one of them has a URI? Vet says it seems to be a small infection caught early as it hasn't travelled to her lungs yet. The vet has advised that I move the sick girl inside away from her cage mate and the other 2 in the shed. I am unsure on whether to do this as then there will be 2 pining girls. If I need to I will, just checking if I really need to.

Thanks guys

More stress might be caused for your littlun by separating them, being away from her buddy wouldn't be good for her health :( I don't think all URIs are contagious. I'd usually be inclined to go with what the vet advises, this is a tough one. Sorry I'm not much use, paws crossed for little Daisy xx

Personaly I would separate her! But keep her in ear shot of the others so she doesn't feel alown

You will get mixed opinions on this, I would not separate as it can make a poorly pig worse if they are missing their friends and also they would need to be in a separate air space for it to be of any use anyway. Just have enough antibiotics on standby to treat her friend too if needed. Hopefully if she has a good immune system she won't come down with it too.

The vet I went to wasn't a particularly cavy savvy vet but the only vet I trust in the local area to at least treat the pigs properly. She wasn't really sure when I asked her about needing to separate them, just said I would to be on the safe side.
I was then inclined not to as Flash and Daisy have such a close bond with each other. Didn't want to cause stress to any of them especially with Daisy being unwell. I thought the best was to keep them together as other wise Daisy would be alone with no pig contact at all for a week. Just wanted to make sure that It wasn't 100% necessary for me to separate them.
Thank guys

I've only separated mine once with a URI and that was when the dynamic had changed and a bit of bullying was noticeable. Otherwise I leave them together as it causes them less stress IMHO.
Hope Daisy soon feels better

Daisy was crackling quite a lot the evening before the vets but had improved by herself in the morning, but knew we still needed the vets.
She seems absolutely fine, no runny nose, sneezing and I can't hear much wheezing from her (though could only hear chewing this morning, lol). She is still eating and being her normal self so I am hoping that she will be just fine. I get the feeling she will get sick of me catching her to give her antibiotics followed by pro-biotics a while after twice a day. Poor little baby.

I don't separate unless absolutely needed and never have done with a URI. Sending lots of healing vibes!

Thanks guys. She has been absolutely great today. Stuffing her little face and wheeking her heart out. She is so good at taking her meds and probiotic water.
Her breathing sounds completely normal now. Going to do the meds for a week to be in the safe side. Left her in the shed in the end.
Thanks for all your replies xx
