Daisy's Abscess - An Update.*graphic Photo *

I feel for you both! My Spike had the exact same thing! An abscess under her chin was always filling up and at one point we had the vet drain it herself and nasty white stuff came out that resembled cottage cheese. Pretty gross! Thankfully, after that one bad infection, it cleared for the majority of the time, but I was flushing it regularly. Abscesses are a pain!

Why have posts been removed and my post been edited without my knowledge ?!
Yes I too would like to know what is going on. It's like you are trying to cover something up that you've arranged behind my back. I've said it before in my last thread that MY guinea pig is NOT being sent to anywhere. She's staying where she belongs. It's not like she's not receiving treatment, I'd understand it if she wasn't. But she is and I have a very experienced vet guiding us and treating my girl. So please don't think it is ok to discuss my guinea pig behind close doors where I'm unable to see what's going on. This is the last health post that I'll ever be posting on this forum again - I've really had enough of the vexation this has caused to me. It's been completely unnecessary.

I've had enough! No-one is trying to plan anything or do anything. I have many very poorly piggies here and I quite frankly have had enough of people trying to make out I have planned something underhand. I don't do any of this for payment, and right now I am beginning to wonder why I bother. I am sick of it!. Try dealing with ill piggies every day of your life and then on top of it have abuse from people who haven't got a clue. It's lovely to know just how appreciated all my efforts are! To say I am angry is an understatement.

I'm sure your efforts are very much appreciated. I for one think it's incredible how much you help the ill guinea pigs and your advice is a God send to piggie owners.

I think what has upset Jack and confused a few others and myself is that Pebbles commented on this thread apologising that she can not do a 'piggy run' this week. As it was posted on this thread it made it seem like there had been arrangements going on to take Daisy elsewhere.

As kind as this offer was, Jack does not want this as Daisy is already receiving appropriate care and had previously stated that. I believe this is what caused upset as it made it seem like what he's doing isn't good enough.

Hope this explains.

Can we please make very clear that there is nothing planned nor is anything going to happen. Any actions to save the life of any extremely ill guinea pig on this forum always happen voluntarily and in full cooperation with the owner of the guinea pig in question if they happen at all. The Excellent Adventure Sanctuary is not there to automatically look after a every ill dental or abscess piggy (it simply doesn't have the capacity not is that its purpose!). We prefer to support the care administered by a regular vet as a matter of policy.

The moderators have received a formal complaint today about a post in this thread and they have decided to remove this post and all references to this post on behalf of the thread starter. That is all!

I apologize for being so paranoid, I really do. However I was made to feel this way (upset) by some of the replies I received on my last thread by certain members. And to see a reply on this thread about not being able to do a piggy run this week really upset and angered me. I would like to know why that post was on my thread? It just seems too much of a coincidence to of been an accident.

I really appreciate everybody's help, support and advice, it has been invaluable to me and Daisy. I'm sorry that I have to keep justifying and explaining myself, it is just that on my last thread; what I was saying was being ignored and people were jumping ahead of themselves.

I edited your post to remove a quote of a post which shouldn't have been made in the first place. No ones piggy is being removed from any one. We are a friendly forum and in the business of offering friendship and professional advice, not pignapping. So lets get back to what we do best - offering advice and being friendly. :tu:

@Littlepig&co How's Daisy doing today? Are you managing to keep the abscess open? They can be a nightmare to manage, especially as they try to heal so quickly.
She's doing well thank you. Is munching away on veggies. Have been cleaning the wound regularly with saline (mix of salt and water) and so far it's still open. Although there is some puss in there? Have been wiping away with a cotton pad and some cotton buds. I'm assuming it takes a few days for the Zithromax to kick in?

We are also awaiting the results of her swab to come back. I think we will find out on either Monday or Tuesday. At least then we will know what type of infection we are dealing with and how exactly to treat.

It will continue to form pus for a while, but you should start to see a reduction soon. It sounds like she's doing well and hopefully it won't be too long before she's fully fit again Often pus from abscesses doesn't culture so don't be disappointed if you don't get a conclusive diagnosis. All the abscesses I have dealt with have responded very well to Zithromax.

@Litttlepig&co

You are not paranoid..buit you are being defensive. for legitimate reasons
.,
It appears that most of the upset regarding this partciular situation with your lovely Daisy has been caused by posts I personally have made...... so I feel I should answer to clairfy matters.

First of all I would like to sincerely apologise to you @Littlepig&co

I'm deeply sorry you felt that i was trying to "take over" or dictate" of "criticise". and that you therefore felt this Forum was working against you.

It wasn't my intention -I thought i was doing my job as H & I adviser on that board in helpinig you with providing additional information to enable you to have a useful dialogue with your (extremely cavy savvy and well-respected) vet ..It was not meant as an attack or cirtiocism. When you made it clear your intentions on the first thread, I bowed out graciously.

Moving on to the second thread....you posted in H & I board again - which "suggested" you were asking for additional help, input and advice (as opposed to "repoorting back" - which should have been on Guinea Pig Chat).
I think we have both had a mutual misunderstanding on this post.

On any thread with possillbe dental or tooth/jaw abcess issues on H & I - I will automatically tag in Furry Friends (and additionally appraise her of my movements i)-
This is because I do a lot of the voluntary free transport runs for piggies wihich may need to be admiitted to the Sanctuary at short notice from across the Ssouth East

As Furrry Friends has already stipulated- nothing is arranged without the owners consent. So anything I posted was NOT pre-determined..it was" for information only", (depending upon whether or not you or other gioenea pigs owners elsewhere, decided to contact her.

It is not an undercover or "done deal" operation - it is merely being pro-active in making potential arrangements about availability and possibilities.

I completely accept and totally respect thatr you are gertting Daisy successfully traeted through her cuirrent condition. and you don;t need any help ro assistance.
Sadly many other forumites arre not so proficiently able to deal with a condition such as Daisy's, hence why we adopt this "pro-active=proactive" approach

I'm very happy to wish you every confidence and success in Daisy's recovery - and have no doubt you will be successful.
,It is a shame to learn that certain other people on this forum (with other agendas) are using this oporutity to wind you up

x

Fair enough, thank you for explaining the reason.

Poor little girl! She's a real fighter! Glad to hear she is doing well! I just wanted to send over some healing vibes from me and the boys!
Good luck with the rest of your recovery little Daisy!x

Hope your piggies doing okay! I know how hard it can be having a poorly pig! So I hope she has a speedy recovery! Keep us updated! :)

Thanks everyone for their get well wishes and vibes!

An update on Daisy:

Daisy has been doing well since her operation on Friday, she is proving a bit difficult when it comes to giving her meds. She also is refusing critical care or mashed pellets from a syringe but is happy to eat them at her free will from a bowl. I am taking this as a good sign as she has gained 53 grams since yesterday, she has gone from 799 grams to 852 grams! We have been cleaning her abscess wound twice a day with saline (salt and water), I have been wiping it with cotton wall balls and with a cotton bud. The wound did scab over today so I had to gently peel it off again. I have spoken to my vet via email and he said the reason that Daisy's dose was low was because he wanted us to give both Septrin and Zithromax together (not literally) instead we have come up with the solution of giving her 0.4ml of Zithromax twice a day and 0.2ml of septrin twice a day. So fingers crossed this will soon be in her system and doing it's job.

My vet said in his email that it is really important to keep the wound open and so long as it does stay open, it will drain out. This is exactly what he said "The pus should drain as long as possible which is why the hole is so important".

Here is a picture of what it looked like earlier once I had removed the scab:

I wish I could e-mail my vet! haha. life would be so much easier!
I'm glad your little girl is doing so well, Your doing a great job.
My dog had a wound that had to heal from the inside out because she burst open her stitches. I was a total state, I nearly blacked out when I seen it.
They seem to handle these things so much better than we do though, haha. While we're freaking out they're all...

Thanks @Littlepig&co for putting photos up of your Daisy. I find treating sick guinea pig really stressful and worrying. Even when I see a vet I still refer to this forum for guidance as when you are back at home from the vets you can feel a bit overcome by what you have to do by yourself.
This thread will be an excellent source of information if I ever have to deal with an open abscess.
I hope Daisy continues to improve with your excellent care and please continue to add photos to show her progress.

Hello everyone, I am very pleased and relieved to be delivering you this update. I am completely amazed at what we have been able to achieve in such a short space of time. I am very happy to announce that Daisy's abscess has gone! Every day for the past 6 days I have been cleaning Daisy's wound with saline (salt & water solution) and picking off the scab as it healed over. Then had to remove any pus that may of been behind it, the whole process would take around 30 minutes at a minimum. I would gently wipe away at the scab with a cotton bud and cotton wool. It has all been so worth it. I am eternally grateful for those that suggested the Zithromax, as I actually asked my vet about the zithromax when dropping her off last Friday for her surgery, he wasn't too sure at first but he must of done some research in the time before we collected her as he put it up for us. Wow it is certainly a magic drug, I am amazed beyond words at Daisy's recovery, I am so relieved. I just want to tell and show everyone!

Daisy is doing so well, she is her happy normal self again and it is an absolute delight to see. She is wheeking again and is munching on hay pretty much all the time - again! Her weight is stable and I am hoping we will be able to get it up in the coming weeks. It is so lovely seeing her all happy again. My god, I could cry right now. I shall stop talking for now.

And a close up of how it looks now:

I had to wet the area around it to take these photos as it is all hidden!

And my brave girl, who I am SO proud of.

*PS* I know carrots are not the best of veg to give, I rarely give it. I just used it as a distraction why I could see to her wound. It worked really well!

What a wonderful update. Zithromax is the most amazing drug. I'm so glad your vet was willing to prescribe it, and the result has been brilliant. However, it wasn't just the Zithromax that gave such a wonderful result. Your post op care in conjunction with the antibiotic is why Daisy has made such a great recovery. Well done!

I'd like to echo what @furryfriends Excellent Adventure Sanctuary has said. It is as much the care and dedication you have given to you piggy that has brought about this brilliant result. Give yourself a big pat on the back (and Daisy a carrot if she likes them - she deserves a treat having been through so much). It's great to see a happy ending - those pictures really tell the story.
:clap::clap:

Oh Jack this is wonderful news! I am so happy Daisy has recovered. It was all thanks to the wonderful care you gave her.

I'm so very pleased for little Daisy. You've done an amazing job and should be so proud of yourself. I bet you're exhausted with worry, but your little girl looks great! x

I am so pleased for you and Daisy. Your last post with the photos are a good record of how Daisy's abscess treatment and recovery progressed.
I swear Daisy has a little smile on her little face. Hopefully you can relax a bit now and just enjoy caring for Daisy. Well done Jack.

I'm really happy for you and Daisy! She really is a strong piggie, and you did an awesome job!
