Hi guys

Not posted on here for a while, but i think one of my piglets is a bit poorly and i wasn't sure where to start...

So yesterday morning i noticed one of my girl's eyes was really weepy and as the day went on i noticed it was sort of milky and sore. she reacts to things on that side so i'm sure she hasn't lost her sight, but when another of my girls got hay in her eye once she just sort of shut it for a day, but it didn't look like this. So I'm worried this is something more serious.

So, my other half has said this can be a sign of diabetes. All I'm wondering is how likely this is, how urgent it is that i get her to the vet, and has anyone had experience of diabetic piglets before?

Thanks so much. Hope little Daisy will be ok, what ever the outcome. she really is a very lovely guinea.

Can anyone help Gemmy? Maybe transfer to Health and Illness section, where all the knowledgeable people gather?

Aah, thank you so much guys. sorry, still getting used to the forum.

Daisy is booked in for tomorrow at the vet's now, so if anyone can help they can. Just have to hope that its not as bad as I am worring its going to be.

Have you tried bathing daisy's eye with warm salt water, use a cotton wall ball tough and not a cotton bud in case you poke her in the eye.
Good luck at the vets tomorrow xx

Hi Gemmy, nice to meet you! I am sorry to hear of Daisy's sore eye. A weepy and sore eye in general could be a result of an infection or localised trauma. A hay poke is often the cause.

Using a syringe (1ml, 2ml or 5ml without needle!), or a smooth cotton pad, flush the eye with cooled boiled water or saline by steadily dripping water into the eye. I would be inclined to advise that a vet examine the eye to check for any injury or foreign objects in the eye before turning to eye drops to cure the problem.

The vets usually prescribe Fucithalmic eye drops (for dogs, cats and rabbits), but a chloramphenicol-based ointment or drops would help combat infection.

Some diabetic guinea pigs do develop cataracts; Daisy's symptoms don't seem to match this, diabetes is unlikely to be the problem especially with her being young.

CCC4, that's so great. thank you so much. you've really set my mind at rest. I'll try bathing her eye tonight, but I'll keep the appointment tomorrow as well, just in case.

I'm sure its something really minor, but you know what its like when your a mum to such lovely pigs, its easy to worry yourself.

I'll report back after her appointment.

thanks again for your help

Hi - good thing that you are taking her to the vet. Most probably it is ome injury to the surface of her eye or something stuck in it.

Thankfully, eye infections usually clear up as quickly as they come on. Make sure that for the duration of the treatment they are on fleece or towels and haven't got any hay where it can cling to the eyes when they are napping and sleeping. The gel or drops your vet will prescribe can make it sticky!

I found that the best way of getting gel into wiggly piggy's eye is by sitting it on your lap facing away from you with a plate of food or grass in front of it. Once it is absorbed with eating, it doesn't mind half as much!

best wishes to your poorly girl!

Hi all!

Quick update on Daisy's eye. we went to the vet yesterday and she said Daisy has an alcer on her eye. she must have got it by getting poked in the eye by some hay and it then getting infected.

she had a little injection of antibiotics (and she didn't even squeak. I was very proud of her) and now she's having eye drops twice a day. it already looks a bit better.

The vet did say that we were good to bring her i so quickly (it only about 3 days since we first noticed it) and if left untreated they can lose their eye, so good news all round that she's going to be completely better in a week or so.

Thanks everyone for your help and support. and Daist sends a big coo and a snuggle as well. x>>

I am pleased the vet was so helpful and you got a diagnosis. Fingers crossed for a full recovery soon!
