Dandelions

Yes guinea pigs can eat leaves, flowers and stems :) though at this time of year look out especially for any fungal growth (orange bumps) on the plant, the wet weather doesn't help either :) Planet Guinea has seeds selected for guineas, Chicory is very similar looking to Dandelion and produces a bigger leaf, I prefer to grow this to Dandelion (its cheaper too ;) )

just a warning btw that if they eat too many they can produce a pigment called porphyn (sp) and it can turn their wee red..morgan had red urine the other week after eating lots of dandelions i was doing my nut i was so worried, it doesnt look like bloody wee, just red not a blood red and its caused by eating too much vit a such as dandelions..

morgan is fine btw i kept a good watch over her but two pee's later and there was no more red stuff :)

I would just watch the color of their urine for a couple days and if it happens call your vet. By the way, did your cavies have diarrhea, too? Because that can can be a sign of too many dandelions.

no, shes fine btw it was a few weeks ago..she just had red coloured urine in 2 of her wee's but after that it was clear :)

Ok! O0 Btw, does anyone know where you can get dandelions commercially in the us? I just have bad in visions of giving my pigs a bad dandelion out of my backyard and they get sick or something! :(

you can only buy them in seeds, or dried..they much prefer the fresh ones! you will notice if there are any bad dandelions, if the stand tall and look nice and green, clean and unmarked/eaten away at they will be fine :)
