Is it safe for piggies to eat the flowers aswell as the leaves ? :)
 
Yes, flowers are perfectly edible!

Please be aware that dandelions are mildly diuretic (makes piggies pee more and increases the need to drink) and they are fairly high in calcium.
 
thanks just tried them with some and they ate flowers and all, they werent impressed when i only gave them two each :(|)
 
Mine fight over the flowers, they love them! It's even funnier when I throw a flower and stem between Rebel and Betty and watch them have a tug-o-war over it! :)) :)) :))
 
I just want a garden so I have access to all this! My piggies love dandelion leaves, but I've never tried them with the flowers :) x
 
My pigs don't seem too bothered by them, they'll be munching on grass come across one look up a little confused then eat it anyway haha never seen them eat the flower only the leaves. I might try giving them the flower (:
 
Have seen mine eat the stalk/leaves then drop the flowers as if disgusted :))
Apparently the flowers have a bitter taste I believe (never tried them tbh :{)
 
Mine love them, but I seem to have exhausted all the supply in our garden. That and it makes my garden look messy!

Luckily my next-door neighbours doesn't seem to mind (I've asked them) when I offer to 'weed' her garden for dandelion flowers and leaves! They think I'm a bit crazy though with my colander (ready to wash them) 'picking' dandelions!
 
These are a firm favourite with the pigs! Unfortunately we don't have a grassy garden (it's all landscaped :( ) so they don't have them very often at all!
 
My boys won't touch any part of a dandelion. Which is too bad because there are heaps of them out the lawn! I'm having trouble finding a patch of just grass to put them on.
 
how to dry them?

Hi, sorry to hijack your thread, but I was looking out at my dandelion filled garden, and then at my bag of dried dandelions from a shop and was wondering how I could do it myself. A quick google seemed to only focus on making tea with them, anyone ideas how to dry them out for the guineas? Is it just a case of cutting them and leaving them in the sun? Thank you for any ideas anyone!
 
I tried mine for the first time yesturday and at first they didnt wont to know but after a while they ate them. :)

I washed mine and popped in the oven on a low heat, worked a treat! Only problem is the guineas ate all of them before I could even store them!
 
You can get dandelion seeds of the internet, and then grow them in a plant pot on the window sill during the winter....:red

why anyone would buy them? when they only have to go for a walk and collect them for free.

Dog wee and car exhaust fumes here! If you don't get one, you get the other :))

I do actually pick dandelions from a nearby field. I wash them when I get home, then they sit in water that's rinsed several times for the duration of the day, then they're washed again before they're given to the pigs.

Just don't pick them anywhere near traffic as the chemicals and stuff in the exhaust fumes is thought to accumulate in the leaves.

You could still collect and grow the seeds for free though, which is what I assumed fluff was talking about, as that wouldn't present any problems with toxins. :)
 
I would never pick any weeds from outside my garden. The seeds were dirt cheap and are good fun to grow!rolleyes
