The hay I've been using since having my guinea pigs had always been great but in the latest batch there's dark black strands of hay and they're EVERYWHERE throughout this batch. I've been taking out every strand of the black stuff but it's taking over twenty minutes to feed them their usual amount that usually takes a minute or two. Should I just ditch this batch or are the black strands actually okay? They look dodgy to me. I've been looking at other brands but they're way more expensive and harder to get a hold of. If the piggies need it then I'll be doing it no matter how much trouble or extra cost is involved but I'd love to know if I'm making a big deal over nothing or not. I hate having to take longer to feed my piggies as they're getting fussy with me taking longer to feed them than usual and I certainly don't want to feed them something bad. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It isn't the hay that is black is it?

Can you post a photo ?

If you have any suspicion it is mouldy hay , then please don't feed.

I would always advise if people are unhappy with their hay - contact the seller straight away . I did this once with an online delivery and it was replaced - no quibbles.

Try googeling types of grass to identifie it , then google grasses harmfull to livestock

If its some of the hay strands that are black - do not feed any of the hay from that pack/bale. It's putting the pigs at risk of fungal infections. I would return it, if possible, to where you got it.

If its like black sticks or weeds can you post a photo?

:D Ditto Cavy_Lover, do not feed any of that bale to your pigs. If it is mould, then the whole bale will be infected. It's just the worst bits that you can see.

Yes it does sound potentially mouldy and a poor batch. Hope you can return it.
What does it smell like? Good hay smells quite sweet and grassy, poor hay smells fusty and musty....I go around sniffing bales at the farm shop - they think I am barmy but it is a good test alongside visual checks.

Thank you to everyone who replied, the picture you posted PiggyOwner is spot on, that's exactly what I've found in the bag of my hay. I've taken it all away and disinfected their cage, I've sent a letter of complaint to the company that's made it and I'll keep an eye on my piggies. I won't be using that brand again! Lucky for me I'd gotten in some of the other stuff just in case. I'm hoping I'll get my money back at least.

Under the sale of goods act anything sold should be "fit for purpose". Obviously the hay you were sold was not fit for purpose. Pointing that out is usually quite effective. It would be a very bad company who didn't, at the very least, refund you.
