I was cleaming out my pigs today and i noticed a dark orange colour urine stain on the vet bed...I'm unsure if this is normal or not. I have read some info on different internet sites but I'm confused as some say its ok and some recommend vetinary treatment.
Can anyone help me?

They had some carrot this morning but only a small amount...no more than usual. Its coco that I'm concerned about as she has just finished a couse of antibiotics for a urine infection. She appears to have stopped squeking when she wees but now I'm worried that she may have a stone?

When my guinea had stones the urine was not really orange but there was an obvious red colour to it.

Not that I can remember as it was a while ago. I think it was definately red, not orangey. Maybe you might be better to go back to the vet just to be on the safe side. Don't worry too much. One of guineas had bladder stones and had the removed at age 6 and recovered :)

What colour is the vetbed? mine used to get orangey stains on the white vetbed but if you watch when they wee its not that colour, the air just turns it darker. Get them in a bath or on a white towel and see what colour it is, my guess is that its nothing to worry about x

I hope I'm worrying about nothing....coco is at the vets now got to pic her up at 6pm...I'm so worried i hope its me over reacting.
The wee did dry on the vet bed and faded away i noticed, i would have thought if it was blood it would have dried and stained? i am waiting now to pick her up, its so horrible :-(

I have had this prob recently. The vet asked me to sit her in a plastic bowl at home, and once she had a wee, suck it up into a syringe, and bring it into the surgery. They tested the wee for blood and crystals. If they dont find anything, it is probably just discoloration due to the carrot. If she recently had a UTI, and you are worried about stones, a competent vet should be able to feel her sides for any lumps. If in doubt, they will usually do an ultrasound or Xray to doublecheck.

Can I ask what the vet is keeping her in for?

The vet kept her in just to do an x ray and to try and find out the source of the problem as she could not feel a stone . I picked her up earlier from the vets and the good news is there is no stone present , however the bad news is her kidneys are abnormaly large with some small cysts in them. I have some pain relief medication for her , but unfortunatly this is not a problem that can be fixed. Basically i have to work out what pain relief is needed and continue with this to make her comfotable :-( .she looked so sad when i picked her up...shes seems ok now munching on hay like she hasnt eaten in days ...poor little thing

Sorry to hear this but at least you know the cause now and can do everything possible to make sure she's comfortable. Even if it's not treatable, did the vet give you advice on diet etc?

I didnt ask about diet which i should have done... I'm trying to look for info now on the internet. i think i was so overwhelmed with all the information coming atme i forgot to ask. i have not been to bed since tuesday night due to a night shift at work and with all the worrying today i think my brain is frazzled! i think il ring them tomorrow and check .

I have not managed to find much information on kidney cysts so far....how can i contact MayH?

You can send her a pm - if you click on messages at the top and choose new message, type her name into the 'to' box and type message in box below and click send. The message will just go to her and will not appear as a post for everyone to read. Hope this helps.

I am so sorry your piggy has this fairly common problem.I have had several pigs over the years with this and it is very sad.I am afraid there is no treatment for chronic renal disease, all you can do is keep them pain free and confortable.Gps with this problem often start to loose weight even though eating and drinking normally.,and tests for diabetis are negative. The gps can go on for months like this then suddenly become anorexic. They can last for days or sometimes weeks like this. The condition is not painful and at the end the pigs go into a como quickly and die within a few hours.I do not pts because the death is fairly quick and painless.

Keep syringe feeding and give water by syringe as well.If you wish you can give a vitimin c supplement.,but this does not really help.As for analgesic, this is difficult because the only reasonably safe drug avauilable at the moment is Metacam which has a side affect of kidney damage.I tend not to give pain releif unless I think the piggy is getting uncomfortable, then I will give Metacam.

I am sorry I cannot give you good news on this, but the prognosis is very poor.

Pm me if you need support,I can give you my phone number as I know what you are going through.I actually have a sow with the same problem at the moment.I have had her teeth/mouth checked and they are fine so it is anorexia. Her left kidney is twice the size it should be and she has been losing weight gradually for about 9 months. It is only in the last few days that she has refused to eat.

I'm sorry to hear your piggie is poorly - lots of cuddles and kisses. Make her as comfortable as possible and I wish youi every enjoyment with the rest of your time you spend with your little guinea.

Thank you MaryH for replying to me... its very usefull information you have given me as i have found very little so far on the internet so i now know what to lookout for.Coco seems to be eating and drinking qiute normally at the moment and appears to be quite comftable. At least i know what is wrong with her now and can try to make the rest of her days as pain free as possible. At the moment I'm giving one drop of metacam a day on her food as the vet advised...i will continue with this untill wednesday and then give as its needed. The vet did explain that metacam can cause kidneyproblems so its a tricky one really. When you say i should sringe feed her water do you mean if she stops drinking ,because at the moment she appears to be drinking quite alot?

Excess drinking is a sign of kidney problems. As she is drinking herself,no need to supplement.

Oh ok, also is there any foods that i should avoid from now on or anything that is good to feed? she currently eats either lettuce, cucumber ,carrot , green pepper, spring greens or occasionally apple.

Be careful with the lettuce because too much can cause gps to have runny poops. My guinea used to love broccoli stems but again not too much because it can make them gassy. Try cherry tomatoes - packed with vitamin c.
