see earlier thread (didn't know how to update title so started new thread..)

I can't quite believe what has just happened.......

got back from the Spar with the baby food to try..to find my son cuddling Dave and alarmed. When he put Dave on the floor Dave promptly flipped over onto his right side. within 30 seconds Dave was fitting.

I rang our local vet to say we were on our way.....only a 3 minute journey..Dave died in my daughters arms during the 3 minute journey.

I can't quite believe it

three stunned and devestated children all stood in the vets office in their PJs and traumatised by the suddeness of this....

The vet checked out his mouth etc and all was fine so not a teeth or throat/larynx ulcer problem. not dehydrated. Best estimate was that it was a neurological related problem that had stiflled his swallow reflex and ultimately lead to the fitting...

So bloody quick...he wasn't THAT ill

A mercy in that sense I suppose, and as I said to my tearful daughter, so nice for Dave that he died in loving owners arms.

Our lovely big old fella
Mavis had been grooming him and licking him today...guess we'll need to watch for their grief

still just too stunned for words.....

Oh I am so very sorry to hear this was just about to reply to your other thread 8...
Sleep well Dave xx

We only had him 4 months..but such a big part of our lives, such a big brown bear of a charactor..

trying to console myself that had had a fantastic, overindulged, loved and pampered last few months of his life

still stunned...

and a little damp around the eyes.

Thanks for the privilige of knowing you Dave......

It is obviously impossible to say with absolute certainty but it sounds as though he had been in heart failure for a few days. If so, there is nothing you could have done for him.

OH wow how awful and very very sad. RIP little dave and thank goodness you were there to look after him.
:(

There is nothing quite like the suddeness of this type of thing, it's happened three times to us with no warning. My heart goes out to you and your children, it's such a shock and so bewildering. As AP says, sounds like there is absolutely nothing that would be done and at least he was with you and your family when he went.

I'm so very sorry. x

I'm so sorry Trip 8...
RIP Dave, its wonderful that he spent his life with you so pampered and loved though - I hope you and your children can take comfort from that, and from the fact that it was all quite swift.
Hugs
Catherine x

Sorry to hear about dave but guinea pigs are the masters of hiding illness, I am sure he knew he was loved and there was nothing you could do. Take comfort in your other guinea pigs, lots of hugs, Eleanor

I am so sorry about poor Dave! You have given him all the care that you could, and he could leave carried by love - they way he would have wanted.

Unfortunately, guinea pigs can go frighteningly quickly when something serious goes wrong; but being prey animals, they send out very few clear signals!

We have a Rainbow Pet section where we remember our lost ones with pictures, little poems or stories and generally share our grief.

Thanks for all your well wishes people - its really appreciated, you are the only people who are really going to "get" it IYKWIM

Had a dignified little "ceremony" for Dave in the Garden today and said our goodbyes.

His Girly cage mates seem fine so far but I am watching them closely for signs of stress (none so far) or masking signs of illness.....I was aware that little furrys can go down hill very quickly..but have never seen an animal go from nibbling a leaf (albeit half heartedly) one minute to fitting and dead so quickly..

I suppose it makes sense about prey animals hiding their illness...hadn't thought about that before. Hope I have not the need to remember it again in the future....

We'll let things settle down again and then think about if we want to try and introduce another piggie into the fold..rescue of course!

As I said in my other post, I am so saddened to hear of Dave's passing. Do take comfort in that he did have such a wonderful life with you, that he knew what it was to be truly loved, and that he passed in the arms of one who adored him. I am so sorry.

Rest well, sweet Dave. xx

I am so sorry to hear the sad news about Dave, RIP little fella. He passed away in loving arms and thankfully it was quick, poor little thing. Sending lots of hugs your way.

Joy xx
