hi people, me again whinging. i *** need to offload I'm getting upset again about david.

iv noticed david is sneezing a lot more than normal tonight iv had him out for floor time i picked him up to check his breathing and i could hear a constant clicking nose. Its not like clicking on his chest, i put my head near his chest to hear his heartbeat, its like a proper bunged up nose. iv put some vicks near him but it hasnt cleared him up. his breathing is really noisy.

I feel helpless and feel theres nothing i can do to help david. Iv been giving him garlic capsules everyday, and vicks, iv done the sudafed. Nothing seems to be working and today hes even worse.

i dont want to keep taking him to the vets because all they keep doing is pumping him full of antibiotics. i just feel at a loss with him and unsure whats best to do.

Even the rodentologist couldnt tell me what was wrong with him just that he seems to have a nasal problem and that i need to get on top of it. If i knew it wasnt life threatening and knew he would be ok, id probably cope better, but i just dont know what to expect everyday.

its coming up for 6 weeks now and things arent getting better. I just dont know what to do anymore its really getting me down, sorry to rant i just know you people understand if i said this to any of my mates they wouldnt take me seriously.
 
Have you pursued the possiblity that the problem is down to allergy? Sadly, I have not much experience with what you can do in the case of a persistent dust allergy.

As this has gone for six weeks without getting worse, I do not necessarily think that it is a URI.

i am hoping to be honest that it is allergy now because whatever it is it isnt going.the rodentologist suggested synititis as well (not sure how its spelt)

However, I'm trying to find out what the allergy is, iv started them on readigrass, they are on fleece, going to get dust free hay. iv stopped using fabreeze and started using bicarbonate of soda. Still no differences though. THen sometimes i think if it is an allergy he does it all the time so is that what an allergy is i thought an allergy came and went every so often. like it does with us humans. Davids condition is all day everyday, sneeze and snotty nose.


aaah I'm glad iv got him i love him dearly, its proving to be one hell of a an emotional rollercoaster tho.

the rodentologist tried to explain that he might of come from really dusty poor conditions and this could of caused some damage to him. its just uncertainty all the time. i need my mind putting at rest. :(
 
Sorry things are still a problem.

My friend's guinea pig had babies a couple of months ago. One of them had a suspected URI when she was a couple of weeks old- clicking and wheezing. The vet gave her a short dose of baytril but advised as she was so young she might always have the clicking. She seems perfectly healthy but still has the clicking apparently, especially when she's sleeping. Only thought about it when I read your post tonight.

If it is an allergy, perhaps you could ask Laura whether guinea pigs can take piriton or similar. If it eases his symptoms at least you would know you were on the right track to look for an allergen.

it doesnt seem to affect his behaviour he still runs around like mad hahah. but if hes always had it he wont know any different will he.

i try looking at it positive and think well at least we have him and not some one who wouldnt look after him properly. i just want him to get the best quality of life, xx
 
My guinea Floris suffers from this too and I still don't really know what causes it. When she has it, her rattle lasts for about 5-7 days and then disappears for months. well, I say disappear, I can still always hear a tiny little rasp when she eats hay. We stopped giving her antibiotics when she was about 2, as both Baytril and Septrin were becoming ineffectual. Thankfully, after the first worrying time we didn't give meds, she managed to get over it by herself. Since that time we have always waited and after the first couple of days it always gets a little bit less, so she does manage to fight whatever it is off.

There is still a possibility that she has something unrelated to respiratory infections, such as a heart problem or hay fever. In 4 years, I have not been able to identify anything that worsens it or brings it on, except stress. This would point to it being a respiratory infection, as guineas tend to get these when they are run down and stressed. But then that doesn't make sense as an infection should get worse, not better, without medication. It's very confusing!

She is very fit and healthy apart from these occasional bouts, she has a great appetite and runs around with the energy of a baby guinea, even when she is 'sick'. I am inclined to think that her lungs/respiratory have been slightly defect from birth. Perhaps it's always been hay fever, or just that her lungs have never been working at 100%. When she gets the rattle, it sounds like a build up of catarrh which just takes a few days to clear her system, but why she has this build up in the first place remains a mystery to me. I do know how worrying it can be though, even now I still watch her like a hawk whenever she gets it.

Sorry for the long reply, but I just wanted to give my experience with this, as I know how frustrating and confusing it can be to have a continually sick guinea. I know Flo might not have the same as David, but I just wanted to say she has done really well despite all her illness. She's 4 now, and still going strong!

Well its very comforting to share this situation with other cavie lovers !
My Madge has excactly the same problem which seems to differ from day to day in intensity ! We have been down all routes of treatment and bedding and although she has never had a snotty nose she does have this nose which emitts what i can only describe as noises made by the elephant man !
She is very well and pigified so i just leave her to ruttle away now she is 3 bless her.She is an abby piggie and my vet did say sometimes it can be congenital.

thanks for this people. its not good that guinea pigs are going through it but its useful to know peoples situations and how they deal with things.

Iv spoken to laura and iv got some piriton syrup going to start this tomorrow.

i hope this helps my little man xx
 
Really interesting information, my little buttercup got a cold after the new year, she was treated with antibiotics and it cleared up but still now i can hear a little rasp now and again but she's in good condition (apart from clipping her nails which is no easy task - it takes 2! - well she was a rescue afterall). I now know a lot more.

Fingers crossed he responds to the treatment. Me and the girls are sending piggy kisses...well Bloss and Violet are scoffing as usual and butter is watching me type.xoxo
 
Let us know how you get on. I do hope the little chap gets a bit of relief from this treatment.
