Spence just turned 5! Recently I noticed if he’s sleeping or even eating facing away from the front of the cage he won’t notice I’m there at all when I approach. Even with a crinkling bag of veggies in hand and the rest of the 4 pigs squeaking! I have to put my hand in front of his face and catch his attention and he’ll come to me. He’s by far my friendliest pig and used to come up to my voice. He used to also be one of the loudest of the pigs! Really high pitched long whistles…but he doesn’t really do that anymore.

He’s been bonded to a new brother for about 8months now, Spot kind of never lets up on Spence ….so much Boar glue 🙄 but no major fights! Spot is young and has weeks with big hormone spikes where he gets a little worse but Spence didn’t change his personality so I left them.
Would him being deaf affect them at all? Don’t want him to be bullied for it, he’s getting to be an old man!

Do guinea pigs like dogs have the ability to just loose their hearing as they get old? Or does he need to see a vet? I don’t really have the money for non-emergent vet visits but I can always take him in a few months to confirm. Not that I think it matters too much besides making sure I alert him when I’m giving food and treats and to confirm his brother will be nice ! He knows breakfast and snack time so he’s usually always awake and ready for that, still eating per usual!

Thank you!

Aw he’s gorgeous. As long as he’s eating and not losing weight I’d just keep an eye on him. As long as there is no fighting I think their bond is fine.

Thank you! Just mounting and rumble strutting but no real fighting!

Mounting and rumble strutting are normal dominance behaviour, as weepweeps says as long as Spence is eating and holding his weight he is fine.
My older boys are both deaf Brillo (7 in Nov) and Red (8 early next year) both also sleep very heavily and don't realise food is coming. I very gently tap their hides to wake them up. Red more than Brillo often picks up on the vibration of the boys in the cage bellow them getting excited when they hear food coming sounds.
